The Role
The months placement was thoroughly enjoyable. The workload was reasonable and right from the start of the placement you're included on a number of instructions the team is working on. The team kept the tasks for me to do interesting and made a conscious effort to get me out and about as much as possible, exploring the City location.
I felt valued by my colleagues as the placement progressed. As my understanding of the tasks at hand grew, so did the responsibilities. The teams confidence in my ability was growing over the month and with it I felt more comfortable in the team environment, increasingly more happy to contribute to discussion.
Right from the start of the placement, my supervisor / mentor was fantastic in supporting me with my role. Always happy to help it was comforting knowing I was able to get the support should I require it. I was guided through tasks with my mentor, increasing the quality of the work I was producing.
The workload over the month varied from day to day. Naturally, the beginning of the week was busier than the end, but at no point did I feel short of work to complete with a good flow of jobs to do. Every day was different, with different colleagues getting me involved with a range of tasks.
I feel I was given an adequate level of responsibility over the placement given the relatively short length and my personal background. With most interns sitting in teams they've no previous knowledge of, there was no great expectation for you to complete more technical tasks alone. As I progressed over the month, so did my responsibilities.
The skills I've developed as well as the knowledge I've gained will be crucial in aiding me through the next stages of my education. Knowing what I want to do post University has allowed me to tailor this placement to learning about specific processes I'll be learning more about in the future.
The Company
The general atmosphere was positive and sociable. The nature of the company means a lot of the teams are constantly working with each other, aiding each others work with clients who have more than one stream of income into the business. Being an intern you're dragged into this and network with other teams, increasing your connections within the company.
The Internship was very well structured with a full itinerary given to us on the first morning. Planned talks from other departments, tours of the city and internship socials were all included in the months plan. This aimed to get us out and about as much as possible, exploring the city and networking as much as possible.
With the internship only being a month long, there was no specific personal training and development. The internship offered an opportunity to explore different sectors of the company as well as specialise in a single team. However, this isn't to say you weren't developing skills through your work within the team, more that there just wasn't a formal training plan.
The future employment prospects with Savills are strong as the company likes to invest time into keeping good talent, promoting opportunities through all levels of the business. The summer internship is a fantastic way of getting your foot in the door at the firm, setting you up for future work.
The Culture
All the summer interns were very sociable and organised numerous socials with each other.
Being in central London the cost of living isn't cheap. Extra costs you incurred from work, ie: traveling to sites, however were recoverable.
The nightlife in the area is fantastic.
All opportunities offered to employees of Savills are passed onto the intern students, allowing you to get involved with as much or as little extra activities as you like.
