The Role
One of the best experiences i could of asked for. As a student you are always striving to get that placement experience that you dream of, which the right people, location, travel and more. So happy to say that i was lucky enough to experience this at Golfbreaks.com. Moving down to Windsor added to the excitement and would recommend it to anyone.
Straight from the start, you feel like a valued member of the team. Responsibilities, projects and content meant that i was producing work right from the get go. I felt a small-medium sized business suited me better, and working within a smaller team meant that my work was valued even more.
The two week crossover with the previous students at the start is so valuable and this approach with the new students integrating with the old is something that i have not heard of elsewhere. Coming in to work i found that support so helpful and this continued throughout my year with constant support and training on the job from my manager. Post-Christmas i had a holistic knowledge of my role and was able to competently help out with the recruitment.
As Cliche as it is, in the department, there was so much to do and i was working on different priorities daily. I was naive to initially think how a marketing department actually worked and the dynamic of the different channels working together. There were a number of different sideline projects that i was working on as well as adhoc requests and main business requirements.
As mentioned before, the responsibility was right from the get-go working with a live website environment and real requirements. I had to hit the ground running and learn to prioritise as well to meet deadlines and prep for meetings. It is a wonderful feeling seeing your research, findings and work get used and for it to be successful.
Whether this is just me as an individual and the drive that i have or if it was down to the placement as a whole - i have learnt above and beyond what i thought i would. The work i have done here and knowledge i have gained allowed me during my year to take on projects outside of work, building a website and taking on a voluntary marketing role within a start up business. I'd be lieing if i said that the placement will help me out in every module of my degree but it has certainly highlighted my interests as a marketer and where i want to head in the future.
The Company
I will probably struggle to find a better atmosphere to be honest, whether this be the boisterous sales floor or the chilled out back office environment. Walking in the office as an open plan, open door policy invites conversation and a non-intimidating approach. There is such a buzz in the build-up to certain events and HR take real care in listening to the staff in making as many improvements as possible.
I have to say the process itself was very slick and the inclusion of a 'pre-placement day' was something again that i had not seen elsewhere. It was a real opportunity to get to know the other placement students as having so many it meant you were able to organise housing/golf trips before starting. Throughout the year we have been looked after very well and being involved with the recruitment process was an extremely enlightening experience - sitting on the other side of the table for once. Golfbreaks.com have been doing placements for years and it was clear to see why they are so successful.
I didn't really partake in any add-on qualifications but i think the money that was spent on me travelling around the country and abroad visiting venues and learning about the product was their way of investing. Familiarisation trips, particularly for the sales team is a regular occurrence with members of staff travelling to different venues all the time.

Extremely. And to be approached about potential roles towards the end of the placement gives me a great sense of satisfaction as effectively it is a year-long interview. The perks, the people and most of all, the opportunity to develop will certainly tempt me to coming back! This is evident through out the company as many of the managers and members of staff were once placement students themselves.
The Culture
It's hard to not have a social scene when you have a placement with 18 other students! There is such a community within the students but thankfully as well, a huge integration with the full time members of staff throughout the business. Regular nights out, events, parties and of course, the GONGS really instil the work hard play hard attitude that the company adheres to.
Expensive! There's no getting away from the fact that Windsor is an expensive place but you're not here to save. My mentality going in to the year was that i didn't care how much things cost, as long as i could get through the year that the outcome would be much more beneficial for myself.
Interesting... It is a good laugh but can't say that it brings much variety! Nevertheless, with such a large placement community - the company you are with is often good enough.
If you are into football or perhaps squash, there was always opportunity to get involved as well as organised events depending on the time of year with work. Summer social and BBQ's!
