The Role
My placement at Elanco was extremely enjoyable. I had an opportunity to own a project, which allowed me to develop project management skills required for a process engineer. During my time I was also involved in contributing to additional projects and given tasks by my team members. My project allowed me to work cross functionally across the site.
I felt valued by my team, as I was conducting a real life project. I was able to see the potential benefits the project could bring to lean manufacturing as well as cost savings and potential cycle time reductions. I feel my colleagues valued me as I was asked to support additional tasks with other projects.
My manager was extremely supportive. I had regular one to ones to assist project progression. My manager was also able to support my university requirements. This involved reviewing of work prior to university coursework submissions, university supervisor visits to sites. My manager gave me additional opportunities to present to senior management teams to enhance my personal development
My days generally were quite busy but well structured. Mornings started with manufacturing meetings. I would then spend time either in the plant, conducting laboratory experiments, or conducting data analysis. I would also spend time making presentations, report writing. During the day, depending on plant requirements, I would support on plant problem solving with my team.
During my 6 month placement, I feel I was given quite a lot of responsibility. I had a project which I owned. I was required to plan experiments and conduct experiments. I would then conduct results analysis and seeking help from scientists with experience in statistical analysis of large data sets. The responsibility I had extended beyond my project to additional project support.
All the skills I have developed during my placement have improved my personal and professional development. I have improved my time management, project management, proactiveness, communication and prioritisation techniques. Professionally I have developed my on plant problem solving skills, understanding of complex processes and pharmaceutical industry. The experience has allowed me to build skills and knowledge which will be extremely useful for final year chemical engineering design projects and future careers.
The Company
The office environment is really friendly. There is always someone to ask for assistance. The office has an good balance of being fun and quiet.
Elanco and Lilly have been running a placement scheme for a long time. Even though my placement length wasn't the usual length or start time, the company was able to involve me in the industrial student placement programme. From presenting posters to professional and personal development trainings, the scheme was very methodical and was appropriate to fit in with university demands.
The company has a very thorough training scheme. At the start of the placement there were general site trainings from quality to documentation. The trainings were either instructor led or online. As a chemical engineer, I had the opportunity to take part in the on site root cause analysis training course. This training allowed me to improve problem solving skills.

The Culture
Yes, students and colleagues often meet up outside of work to go to bars etc in Liverpool especially in the summer.
During my time in Liverpool, I lived in the centre of Liverpool in student accommodation. Due to the placement only being 6 months, this was the best and cheapest option. There were regular trains to the local train station near work allowing commuting to be easy. Some student accommodations also offered parking permits, if you would prefer to drive
The nightlife in Liverpool is extremely enjoyable. There are lots of bars and nightclubs. There are many new places popping up every month. There is something to suit everyone. Living in the centre of Liverpool, means you are able to take full advantage of this. The Baltic Market is definitely a place to visit, you will not be disappointed.
Yes, a lot of people which go to the gym during lunch times and after work together.
