The Role
I really enjoyed the internship! I learned lots about tax and gained a lot of important skills. My team were really nice and welcoming and always happy to help. The work was really varied and offered me an excellent insight into what I could be doing on a graduate scheme.
My colleagues were always happy to help if I had any problems and they were excellent at explaining the work I had to do. They always made the effort to make sure that everything was going alright and would try and find things to do so that I didn't get bored.
I was given lots of guidance by managers as to how to do a particular task and they were always excellent at answering my questions and providing clarification if needed. Possibly my supervisor could have made it clearer what criteria the firm was looking for in an intern and identify areas for improvement.
I found that is varied quite a lot. Some days I would be very busy, some days reasonably busy and some days I was very quiet. However, I nearly always had some work to do and if not, I could ask and work would be provided that I could do.
I was given quite a lot of responsibility, similar to the level that a graduate would have. This responsibility also meant that the work was really interesting as it felt like I was really contributing to the firm. Yet, I was always well supported and able to ask for help, so the responsibility never felt overwhelming.
It may not be that useful for my degree directly, although there are definitely some transferable skills that I gained by doing my internship such as flexibility and the ability to prioritise. I also gained an excellent insight into the world of tax, where I intend to start my career.
The Company
The office was pretty large, but everyone that I met there was really friendly and polite. It was a large office with 8 floors but everyone would always smile and hold open the door when you walked through it or when you were waiting in the queue for a lift.
The firm invested a lot of time and effort in making sure that we were given lots of opportunities to develop through out the placement. We attended a 2 day training workship at the firm's training facility and also had lots of online inductions. We also obviously has lots of on the job training for other people within the team.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
There is the opportunity to gain professional accountancy/ tax qualifications with the support of the firm. There is also lots of opportunities for secondments and chances to see what other teams do. There is also the chance to work up the ranks if you perform well and get promoted to a more senior position.
The Culture
The other placement students and interns were always really friendly and I often met up with them over lunch time. The firm also provides lots of opportunities to meet interns from all around the country so you do definitely have the chance to meet new people and socialise that way.
Working in or near the city of London, it was very expensive to eat, drink or just generally socialise nearby. It was also quite expensive to live as most accommodation in London is expensive and if you live further out then you have to pay lots of money to commute in every day.
