The Role
very much over the time of the placement I've learnt more in three weeks than in seven years of education, I've found that the industry i am going into id completely different to the degree I'm doing, i feel the placement is preparing me for the work place in the way no educational system can do.
quite a lot, everyone is very happy to help however people can be busy so It was hard to find the information i needed at times, this meant emailing people didn't always work, therefore i had to go and physically talk to people which in hindsight was a valuable lesson.
At the beginning of the placement quite a lot and towards the middle and end less so as i became more competent. Also my manager was very busy at times so i had to be self reliant and become more independent, which at first was daunting but ultimately rewarding looking back.
at the beginning of the placement i found that i was somewhat bored due to not having to do, however as the placement continued i was given thing to do and i went from having nothing to do to having a sizeable work load, I'd rather have a heavy work load than nothing.
This varied through out my placement (first three to four weeks) i was not given that much responsibility because i was still learning the ropes, however towards the middle and end was given significant responsibility and pressure, which i valued because it made me feel a valued member of the team.
Significantly, it gave me a much better understanding of the world of engineering, it also gave me a better understand of how engineers work and how to apply the possesses you learn in a real scenario, i also got to grips with the engines and turbines I'll be working with in my degree.
The Company
Happy but busy. On the whole all my co-workers where upbeat and happy to help where they could at times they where very busy and this showed in visible stress however i never had an issue with attitude or the mood of others in general. It was a good working environment.
On the whole good, It took a while to get organised at the beginning of the work placement i was a little looked over and at points had whole days of doing nothing, however after the initial settling in process the placement became more organised. however it wasn't always perfect
A lot, I got an hour with each member of my department, at the beginning of the placement, learning what they did and how they worked, i asked lots of questions and although the learning curve was very steep it was definitely worth while I was also made to feel i could ask any question without feeling stupid.
Subsidised Canteen
on the whole good there seems to be some friction between some departments and office politics however i think that's the case with a lot of large companies, every large company will have there fair share of issues and shot comings however I'm looking forwards to perhaps become an employee.
The Culture
On the whole good most of the other people placement were nice and we socialised when we weren't working which helped alleviate the boredom of work.
Cheap on the whole food was cheap and Rent is relatively cheap therefore money was not tight in anyway and i was payed enough for it not be an issue. B&M is always a good place to go on a budget you can probably get a car in there for like £4.
My placement is in the same area as my uni and it's pretty Lit. Drinks are Cheap, bars are nice, especially the German Beer bar serves drinks by the double pint NOICE. Spoons is okay nice later on in the evening when all the alcoholic day drinkers go home. Moka is good, smells like a tramps pocket but that doesn't really matter when you're completely Car-parked. The uni bar (TowerBar) is good gives massive plates of artery clogging food, they know you'll need it for the night ahead. On the whole i would say pretty good, apart from the bouncers in Macies.
Not many, most of the time work took up most of the day and I wasn't there long enough to get into any long term clubs. perhaps in my next summer placement I'll make more of an effort to get involved in clubs and other Social events I have 3 more additional placements for the next three summers.
