The Role
I really enjoyed working with a diverse and energetic engineering team. Furthermore, learning about the product was interesting and rewarding.
I felt valued as part of the team from day one and was welcomed to join colleagues for lunch and external social activities. I was involved in all team meetings despite my initial work being on a less urgent level than that of fellow colleagues.
Whilst my manager was very busy, an open door approach felt appropriate and they were there to answer any questions. I had two team leaders who set tasks with clear guidance and support.
I wasn't very busy for the first two or three weeks. However, this is to be expected as a new employee because it takes time to absorb and learn enough about the product and company to apply skills in context. After this I became fairly busy with 3-4 projects/pieces of work on the go and being involved with team meetings as well as training and extra curricular activities.
We worked independently in that it was our responsibility to complete tasks and to ask for help when needed. Whilst some tasks placed considerable responsibility, some others were more for our own knowledge and understanding, and I appreciated this balance.
Simply being in this environment has allowed me to see the links between what you study and how it is applied in the real world. Having a greater understanding of the functions and structure of this company, I will be able to continue my studies ensuring I research how I can apply the content I learn into a real life situation. Furthermore, I have improved my technical knowledge - more awareness of failure modes, root cause analysis etc.
The Company
Everyone was positive, helpful, friendly and cheerful. The hotdesking policy made it easier to chat to and meet new people.
Although it took a few weeks to begin to have more structured days, everything was prepared for when I arrived and the openness and helpfulness of colleagues meant that I could always ask for something to do/help if necessary.
As well as detailed product training online and in the classroom, all interns were given the opportunity of Continuous Improvement training which I greatly appreciated and hope to apply in the remainder of my placement as well as in future roles.

They have a structured graduate scheme at Siemens and always seem to want to be expanding and hiring new diverse employees.
The Culture
We were put in contact with eachother before and so it was easy to have lunch together or socialize externally.
I was lucky to rent a room for £450 a month. As the internship was in the summer, many social activities were cheap or free such as picnics, going for a drink. £20 a week on food and perhaps £10-£20 a week socializing - but this is very dependent on what you choose to do. Some weeks I didn't spend much, others I went shopping and paintballing which was a bit more expensive!
Leamington Spa has lots of nice pubs and cocktail bars to choose from. A few small student clubs too, though I haven't been to one yet.
Football, paintballing, international society, leaving dos as well as general meetups.
