The Role
I enjoyed my placement due to the variety of challenging projects I was faced with. The people I worked with in this placement were enjoyable to be around and made a fun environment to be in. At times however, there was a lack of workload which caused the days to drag.
Depending on the person I was interacting with changed what value I felt. Some people that I reported directly to valued my contributions and ideas however, others saw me as just an intern and therefore someone with very little to contribute to the company. This could be demeaning at times.
My department managers were very helpful in providing me with work to get on with and to advise me if I had any questions about the tasks that I had been set. They were also able to guide me on matters non work related but still within the company, such as IT equipment.
At times not very busy at all as some times I would not have any work to do. Other times I would be very busy and have numerous task to complete. This up and down work load was constant throughout my placement at Siemens. A steady stream of work would be more beneficial.
Not a lot of responsibility. The projects that I oversaw were still decided and actioned on by members of the management team meaning I just put forward proposals and options. This lack of automation in my job removed pride of work. The most responsibility I had during my placement was visiting a supplier with another employee.
No benefit to my studies. However, the engineering work that I have done in this placement will aid me in my continuing journey towards chartership status, CEng, with the IMechE, Institute of Mechanical Engineers. It has helped me to fill some engineering requirements for my quarterly report that have been difficult to previously hit.
The Company
A friendly and funny atmosphere. everyone got on well and the office was very productive. it was easy to approach other people in the office to as questions about anything which saved time. In my opinion, the communication in the office could be improved by a change to the layout.
IT equipment was delayed and therefore I could not do any work for the first few days. Documentation that had been requested and filled out was reportedly not received in parts. The departments in which interns are placed are only made aware they are getting an intern days before they start and therefore do not have much time to find some work for them to do.
The scholarship scheme that I am on at the university help me to purchase course materials and IT equipment. This monetary investment by the company is substantial, however they do not invest much time in us and as a result we are left to our own devices for most of the year with little guidance or inclusion in company announcements or yearly figures.
Appealing as it is a company I have spent a substantial amount of time in and therefore have experience of the company and its on goings. However, other employers in the same sector pay graduates more and include more benefits. which makes prospects elsewhere more attractive. Therefore, I a undecided at the moment.
The Culture
Sometimes. Interns from other areas of the country and other universities would provide a good mix of diversity and bring out interesting social interactions and conversations. However, some interns become 'too big for their boots' if they get a slight bit of responsibility and as such begin to boss others around.
I lived in my current student digs so no added cost.
did not go out.
