The Role
I really enjoyed this internship as I got to see the many aspects that go into project engineering for railway signaling. I attended meetings and got to write reports. I was also taken to locations on track to see the components and the systems in place.
I was asked to design a safety system which will be implemented. My colleagues were all really helpful in explaining concepts when I was confused. They also appreciated the work I did.
I was given a lot of support by all my colleagues and supervisors. They asked how I was doing and if I needed help. They were also really accommodating and tried to make the internship as interesting for me as possible by asking what I liked to do.
I did have projects to work on, however sometimes I did find myself with nothing to do. The team was helpful and tried to give me tasks then that would help them.
I was given the responsibility to design two safety systems in two different locations. I worked alone on these projects so I had full responsibility.
I have definitely learned how to write better reports and how to convey my ideas more clearly. I also learned more about the design steps required to come up with a solution. I was also given the opportunity to work in wind power for a week where I developed my skills in MatLab and Excel programs.
The Company
Everyone was very welcoming, not just the engineers but also the commercial team. Everyone was very helpful and talkative.
It was quite organized as I was given a list with projects to do when I arrived. There was also room for me to customize what I wanted to do and if there was anything in particular I wanted to see/do. There were some times when I finished my work and the team was not sure what to give me so that could have been improved.
I was given several training courses to complete to develop skills as well as to learn more about the different aspects of the company.
Flexi Time
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
I am unsure of this as it has not been mentioned. I would however be happy to get a job here.
The Culture
Yes, everyone was friendly and interactive with each other. One night we went to the cinema together to watch a movie. At my internship I was the only intern but I got along well with my colleagues.
I stayed in my flat in Edinburgh and commuted to Glasgow daily. The train tickets were expensive. The costs in Glasgow for socializing was decent.
I personally did not experience nightlife as I went back home.
There were a few volunteering opportunities but they were organized in advance so I did not have a chance to part take in them.
