The Role
My internship at SFS was fantastic! My team was exceptionally good at giving me tasks to do, which had a tangible, positive impact on the company. My team was very welcoming, which has made me look forward to coming to work every day. There has also been plenty of opportunities to further develop myself should I choose.
I felt as if my contribution during my internship has been valued by my colleagues, as my work has been important in preparing for upcoming presentations that my peers have had to deliver. This is because I have been given responsibility by my team. In terms of my contribution to the team socially, I also feel like I have taken part and become part of the team.
The extent to which I have been given support by my line manager has been amazing. She has always been there for me in both work-related matters as well as those personal. We have a fortnightly catch-up where she asks how I am doing, and gives me very helpful feedback to reflect on.
I have been fortunate enough to have always been busy. This is due to both my a) Pro-activeness in seeking tasks b) My team putting enough faith in me to be able to handle tasks. I feel like unless you make an effort yourself, then you will possibly start to get bored - which is fair enough.
I have been given much responsibility during my internship by SFS. I have been allowed to take on tasks that have been discussed during our weekly catch-up meetings, with the support of my team there if I get stuck. I am always encouraged to think out a problem first, and then go to my manager/colleagues for help.
The skills and knowledge I have developed during this internship have been very great! Learning in a practical environment also means these skills (both unique to the job and transferable) are much more likely to stay with me as a result. I highly recommend students such as myself pursue this!
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office is extremely positive, at all times, even when the period could potentially get stressful. This environment is fun to work in as well as comfortable enough for me to be able to ask questions without feeling like I am getting in the way. It has mean that I am always looking forward to going to work every day.
For me, the internship was very well organised by my Line Manager, however due to this, others may have a different experience. My line manager had everything set-up of me, so that when I arrived, it was seamless. This also extended to throughout my internship, as she was always very organised in allowing me holiday-days etc.
The company have been extremely good at investing in all their talent, not just the interns. In terms of time, everyone is willing to use this precious resource to help you, instead of their day job. In terms of money, the company spends a lot on developing their staff. I had courses subsidised by the company, in times when I needed tuition from outside of the office.

Working at Siemens is a very appealing prospect. This is due to a combination of the innovative work that this company does as well as the culture they are trying to engrain into every part of the business.
The Culture
The social scene with fellow interns and colleagues was mixed. Since all interns started at different times, the relationship we have with one another is not quite as strong. The social scene with my colleagues however is brilliant, as they have included me in all social activities that they do together.
The cost of living in the SE of England is very high compared to what I am used to, in particularly rent. Other expenses such as food are standard in my opinion across the UK. The cost of socialising down here can be quite expensive also, however this is to be expected in London.
The nightlife in the immediate area is not particularly great, but London City is a 15 minute train ride away so this is not so bad. Again, nightlife can be quite costly.
I think this is definitely down to the person. Personally, I did not join so many activities apart from a local gym.
