The Role
As an engineer, I was working at the overhaul department for the small gas turbine side of the Siemens. Everyone was welcoming and receiving my computer equipment was done within the first week. I liked that my placement was with a engineering related department where I saw a true insight into the engineering lifestyle.
I felt very valued by my colleagues as they always ensured that I had tasks to do and they checked up on me to see how I was getting along. They were also very understanding that this is my first time in a office working environment and helped me to adjust to the office lifestyle.
Management was always there to help and support me. My manager was always a quick email or walk a way if I needed any help with work or other issues. My manager would have a good laugh with everyone in the department but will always give the support and guidance needed.
On a daily basis, it was a hit or miss. On most days I will be busy however I did have days where no tasks were available or the tasks were rather tedious and repetitive. On the days where the task were enjoyable the time went fast but time would seem to slow down when no tasks were available
I wasn't given as much freedom in the project that I thought that I would. I would look into how to do the task well and then do the task in that manor. However, when I presented my work, I did not portray the vision of the person I was working for. Even though that they had no knowledge in the task I was doing.
Skills that I developed was independent working as I would work on my own for the tasks that was set for me. I also learnt how to manage my time well so that I was able to hit the deadlines that was set by my manager. I believe that this will help with my degree as I was terrible at hitting deadlines for coursework but now I have learnt techniques to overcome that issue.
The Company
Everyone in the office are very friendly and very welcoming. Everyone knew each others name and would like to have a good laugh. The office is quite most of the time but people still to talk to each other either about work or just a general chat. Moreover, everyone was polite to each other and never rude.
The summer placement was well organised as I was placed into a department on the first day and I was told what project they had planned for me to help in. I received my IT equipment on my second day and my work card to access the building all worked.
The company has invested a lot in me as they currently pay a bursary of £15,000 over a 3 year period during my time at university. This has helped me focus on my studies full time during the university period and they offer me the placement over summer time till I finish university.

I am very appealed in my future employment prospect within Siemens in Lincoln. This is because the company looks after there employees well and it is a well respected company for engineering. I can't wait to have a two year placement with them after I graduate and hopefully get a full time job with them in the future!
The Culture
There was a good social scene amongst the fellow summer placements. Some of them would organise nights out with the other summer placement. There is also fantasy football which is organised by interns. Some interns also play five a-side football together. We also have messaging groups to orgainse meet ups or just to chat.
Renting in Lincoln is moderately cheap compare to other places in the UK and the shops and restaurants are cheap as well. They're a good amount of pubs and big events happening in Lincoln that will give you the opportunity to get out and mix with the locals. Everyone is rather friendly in Lincoln as well.
The Nightlife in Lincoln is good as they're good variety of night clubs to choose from and different events every night. The taxi service is cheap and fast and in the center of town, they're is a 24 hour McDonalds to got to after the clubs. (Other restaurant are open during the night as well)
There are a lot of opportunities to do activities as Lincoln has the showroom which has a rock climbing facilities and sport centers that offer various activities like swimming or football. It many be hard to find out about these clubs unless you go looking for them as they are not well advertised.
