The Role
I really enjoyed my placement in R&D, with a good balance between laboratory and desk work. There were many development opportunities outside of the normal day to day work, which were enjoyable. There were a few up and downs, with tight deadlines.
I felt welcome into my department and team. I was given a worth while, important project. Additionally, I was often ask to do favour for different members of my team.
I was well supported by my direct supervisor, with her providing guidance and assists when needed. Due to the nature of my project, we ended up working together often.
The amount of work I had on increased through out the year.
The project I was given for the year was important to the department . Due to the number and complex nature of the techniques needed, I was not always able to work independently. But was encourage to when possible.
The large amount of experience with multiple different techniques will assist with both my degree and any future laboratory based jobs. I have also have improved many soft skills, including both oral and written communications.
The Company
the atmosphere was really friendly and welcoming.
Overall, the placement was well organised. I was given a well thought through project. However, I didn't always have the necessary access to software packages, which made some tasks challenging.
I attended multiple development days and was taken to a 2 day conference in London.

In R&D, the graduate scheme is very limited and obtaining a direct entry position is challenging.
The Culture
There wasn't any other young people in the department, therefore aside from the Christmas party and meals, there wasn't much a social scene. However, the within the IP community there was a decent social scene.
Living cost are quite expensive, however they do vary between properties. Ware is a pretty small place and therefore, there isn't much aside from pubs and bars.
There are good bars and pubs, however there is no club in ware itself and one club (pop world) in the neighbouring town.
There were some opportunity, however you had to put yourself forward.
