The Role
It's been a fantastic experience. I learned a lot, met nice people and got much better idea about what I'd like to do in future.
All my colleagues treated me like a part of the team - not "only a student".
My supervisor has given me a lot of the support and guidance, while still leaving the space for the independent thinking and ideas.
Very busy but not overhelmed.
I was responsible for my own project and was also involved in other activities within the department. I was presenting my data at the departmental meetings and outside of the department to our collaborators. I was also looking for the technical support when having issues with specialised equipment and better solutions to obtain answers from the experiments.
In addition to all the technical skills that I learned and will certainly be very useful, and the general research experience, I have learned many "transferable" skills, such as presentations, report writing. Also, the placement was important for my personal development.
The Company
Great place to interact with a large number of people, but still not too busy/noisy to concentrate on the work. Lunches with my colleagues (outside the office) were always great for socialising.
Nicely structured and well organised.
I was treated the same way as the full-time employees. I received all the specialised trainings, as well as participated in other acitivities, attended the "science days" and had chances to attend no-project related seminars, etc.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
The current economy climate does not allow for many job offers around. However, there are still some opportunities, although probably more competitive.
The Culture
Yes, the students were living together and socialing together. I have made great friends during my placement. This was also encouraged my the company, as we had the "introductory" day before the start of the placement and so we had a chance to get to know each other.
Not too expensive in the area.
Enough pubs and clubs around.
Yes, some people were volunteering in charities in London. And perhaps many more sport or other opportunities.
