The Role
I loved the work during my placement mostly due to being a part of a fantastic team that were extremely supportive, knowledgeable and welcoming.
My colleagues were very appreciative of the work I was doing and supportive of any projects that I I took on, to support my development.
Monthly meeting with my supervisor allowed me to discuss development opportunities. For example, work shadowing other departments and additional projects to get involved. I also felt extremely supported by my supervisor whilst applying for the Future Leaders Program.
At times I had a greater workload of routine work to carry out. This detracted time and attention away from the project which I was independently working on which made it difficult at times to progress . However, I enjoyed the experience of being stretched and learning how to optimise my time and manage the workload effectively.
On a day to day basis I was not given a huge amount of responsibility for anything in particular except for the duty of carrying out routine work to a high standard. In the absence of a senior member of staff, I was trusted and relied on to take some of their additional responsibilities.
The professional skills I have gained throughout my placement year have been totally invaluable. Time management, project management, communication, adaptability and essential IT skills will be transferable in any future job I have. Furthermore, I have found the microbiology knowledge I have gained will be beneficial for my final year of university.
The Company
The beginning of my placement was fairly slow. It took a while to be fully trained and in the meantime I would have enjoyed to have spent the time working on my project however the project wasn't assigned to me until after I had trained. As a result, I spent the first couple of months doing very repetitive tasks.
They invested a lot of time to assist my development. I felt well supported by my managers who were always accommodating my requests to spent time shadowing other departments or attend a training session.

The Culture
Yes there was. Unfortunately I lived from home and commuted to my placement which made going out together difficult for me.
