The Role
I have really enjoyed my time at Volvo. I was been given a number of opportunities throughout the year which have enabled me to improve my skillset. This included being given a lot of responsibility in my day-to-day work and the chance to be heavily involved in large scale projects.
I have always felt valued by colleagues. My manager and team have always included me and made me feel as though I am not just a placement student. When working on projects with people I did not see in my regular line of work, I was always welcomed and valued.
My line manager made sure from my first day that I had sufficient support. Monthly catch up meetings, team meetings and regular conversations made sure any issues I had were resolved quickly. I was always been encouraged to ask questions and raise queries which was welcomed by management.
With the nature of my department, work volumes are very dependant on the sales volumes. When there was quiet periods, or extreme volumes, my work levels would fluctuate. I have always had a project to work on if volumes in my day-to-day work were low, which helped mitigate this issue.
I have been given a lot of responsibility at Volvo. Large projects I played a significant role and in my day-to-day work, I was given an individual mandate half way through the year. This allowed me to sign off up to a certain value without anyone checking my working.
A lot of the financial, team work and decision making skills will help me at university. The training I received was specific to my line of work, so whilst this won't necessarily carry over into my degree, it will definitely help in my future career.
The Company
The culture at Volvo is very welcoming and positive. A number of schemes were brought in through the year to encourage team work and the social side of the company.
My placement year was well structured and thought out. I had a training plan from my first week and everything was ready for me on my first full day in the team. I had a number of projects lined up for different points in the year and meetings scheduled to track my progress
I was given weekly training for the first half of the year, which enabled me to get an individual mandate (once the company was happy with the standard of work). A number of training academies are run throughout the year, which I was put on right away. Volvo gave me a lot of responsibility and this has enabled me to improve my skillset greatly.

Volvo does not have a graduate scheme. This means there is no security to come back to Volvo when I finish university and they cannot offer a job role a year in advance like graduate schemes can.
The Culture
Volvo mainly recruited around the local universities, which meant a high number of placement students commuted to work rather than moved to Warwick. This meant the social side was a struggle.
I lived at home and commuted to Warwick each day so I cant really comment.
Warwick isn't the best if you're looking for a night out. Closest places are Leamington Spa, Coventry and Birmingham.
There was not too many activities outside work to get involved in.
