The Role
I have enjoyed my internship with Centrica very much. I have been highly satisfied with the amount of responsibility I have received, with the opportunity to work on real projects. I have been highly supported by my fellow team and have had lots of opportunities to facilitate my personal development.
I felt highly valued and welcomed by my team. Initially, at the start of my placement, I was a lot more dependent on other members of my team, all of which were incredibly patient and helpful. Now that I am able to work on my own projects, I am a respected member of the team and can even support others with their projects.
I have felt very supported throughout my placement and every care has been taken to ensure that I am comfortable and that I have everything I need. The amount of guidance I have received has been well judged, so that I may get on with my projects independently, but I also have all the help I need available should I need a hand.
I was kept very busy through a range of diverse projects which all required different skills. My days often consisted of at least one meeting or a conference call and so I had a lot of opportunities to mix with other people throughout the office. If I did ever require a break, the office (in my case Windsor) has lots of comfortable break out spaces.
Once I became familiar with the office environment and settled into my tasks/objectives, I was given a lot of responsibility. Members of my team would ask for support on real-life projects and I was also responsible for managing colleagues from other departments such as marketing to assist in my projects.
My internship has definitely helped me develop the skills I need to pursue a career as an analyst and has given me the experience of what it is like to work in the energy industry. The Internship includes additional sessions to aid your personal development e.g. Excel Training, Presentation Training.
The Company
Incredibly friendly. The offices are lain out so that everyone sits together at the desks regardless of their role/status. This helps to promote networking and encourages collaboration which is beneficial to everyone. There is very much an emphasis on your team, and colleagues regularly go on together for teambuilding events, leaving dos etc.
The Internship was very well organised. From before I even started my placement I had received multiple calls from the Grad Team informing me of what to expect from the role and also ensuring I had all my questions answered. At the start of your placement you work with your Line Manager to construct a list of Objectives to work towards, and establish what you will gain from these.
Centrica has invested a huge amount of time and facilities in me. They have insured that I've been trained up in all the necessary skills and that I feel comfortable in the Company. You can get as much out of the internship as you like, for example my team expressed an interest in learning about the power generation side of the business, and so they organised a tour of Peterborough Power Station.

The internship provides a great gateway to the Grad Scheme, ensuring you have all the necessary skills and allowing you to bypass a second Assessment Centre etc. Your Line Manager and Graduate Talent Team discuss your performance and view your end-of-placement presentation to determine whether a permanent role at Centrica is right for you.
The Culture
All the interns were provided free accommodation together at a local university campus and so we often spent time together after work and on the weekends. We all worked together taking turns to take people to and from work, and often ate lunch together, it was nice to be with people having the same experience.
Accommodation was provided to us free of charge. Windsor is a relatively expensive place to live, although you can save money by shopping around, sharing lifts, bringing packed lunches etc. every day. The area is nice so it is worth a slight premium.
We often go out every Friday into Windsor, which from the accommodation is a twenty minute taxi or so. Depending on which club you go to the price of entry and drinks can vary wildly so it is worth shopping around and getting a group of you together for a large taxi and a good night.
Personally I found that adjusting to a full time role made me quite tired and so I spent most of my time socialising rather than getting involved in activities. However, the office does have its own gym with additional classes available in the morning, during lunch etc. Windsor has a lot of activities available.
