The Role
I enjoyed the overall internship experience for many reasons: 1. The working environment: the team I joined (CFO Quants) is very friendly and chill and willing to answer to any request or question I had. We organized lunches and dinners together which helps me know them as people and not just collegues 2. The overall structure of the internship program (weekly learning sessions, interesting conferences and seminars, a lot of networking events..) 3. The location (Saint Paul) is just lovely
My colleagues are very chill and don't mind if I leave before or after them as long as I do the work that I have to finish. Hence, I am given the autonomy to organize myself and take the time I need to finish my tasks. I have been given a work that concretely helps the business cover some gaps and for this reason I felt valued.
My manager was the best manager I could ever asked for. He gave me advice, instructions, support, explanations that really helped me in carrying out my project. He pushed me in taking responsibility for my work and running calls with people in the US. From my perspective I feel I made a lot of progress, not just in terms of knowledge and understanding of the business, but also in terms of work culture, confidence, organization skills..
I wouldn't be able to generalize as there were some days where I didn't have much to do, and some others where I needed to stay in the office for a longer time to finish some tasks. Also there were some weeks where my calendar was extremely full of events to attend that made me go back and forth from one building to another, which made me feel very busy. But overall, I would say not as busy as I expected to be before the start of the internship.
Honestly I think I was given more responsibility than I expected before the start of the internship. I thought I was going to be given some routinary work, but in reality they gave me a project that will concretely help the finance team in the US and have impact in their activity.
I don't think I developed technical skills so much, but I definitely got an idea on how it is working in a international institution like Bank of America. I am sure this experience will help me in the future after I finish my Masters wherever I'll be working. In other words, I end up this experience more confident, proactive and responsible.
The Company
The atmosphere was chill and friendly. The team I joined didn't have a competitive environment but rather collaborative one. Everyone is willing to help whenever there are some issues to be discussed or fixed. During the day there's always some time to have friendly chats with the team about topics outside work.
The organization of the whole internship program was the fact that surprised me the most. Previously I had another summer internship in Italy in a smaller company and I can honestly see the big difference. Everything here seems so organized and well structured, in terms of training, events, reviews, learning sessions, meetings etc.
Honestly I would say a lot. We had a first week of training, which although I think were not that useful from a technical point of view, gave me the chance to get to know the other interns more. Beside technical training, there were a lot of seminars and events aimed at personal development, i.e. focused more on soft skills (organizational, confidence, team building..).
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing. I met many people from different divisions and what I noticed is that everyone loves working for BAML. There's great internal mobility which is considered an added value by everyone. The bank supports personal development of each employee so if someone wants to change team the management does everything it can to address this request. The flexibility within the company is one of the reasons why future employment is very attractive.
The Culture
Not too many among fellow students (at least the ones in my division)
Very high as expected
There were many events outside work organized for the interns. For example we had private viewings of art exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts and National Portrait Gallery and some other exciting activities like an Escape Room event. The internship program is not just about work but it's more a great experience where you get to know people and also have fun.
