The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience. My colleagues are really friendly and supportive, and so is the Early Careers team. There is a huge emphasis on personal development and there are resources available to help with that such as trainings. My manager made sure I was always happy with my experience and provided excellent coaching and opportunities for further development.
The team I was placed in was really supportive in my development. Everyone in the bank is friendly and I always felt valued by my colleagues. I received feedback on my worked and was coached on areas that I could improve, which helped me build on my skills and knowledge.
I had weekly 1:1 meetings with my manager and regular meetings with my graduate buddy. My colleagues were always happy to support me throughout my internship as well.
It depends on the task at hand. I had days where I did not have much to do and other days when there was a lot of tasks, but I never felt too overwhelmed. I have also worked on additional tasks based on preference and availability to further develop my skills in my areas of interest.
I was given real responsibility from the first day. It's great to know that you are contributing to something that will be used by the team in the future, and that you are adding real value to your team and other people's experience. I was given the opportunity to organise team meetings and trainings in addition to my main projects.
I have improved both my soft skills, as well as my technical skills. I am going back to my final year of studies after the internship and I believe that the industry experience I've had will be really useful in how I approach my research project and future career.
The Company
It is very relaxed and teams are usually collocated. There are meeting spaces and rooms across the building which is very convenient.
I set objectives with my manager in my first week. Beyond that, I was able to work on different projects and get involved in different activities as appropriate. There is a 10 week plan you receive at the beginning of the internship that outlines main activities and objectives for each week.
For a summer internship I think the training opportunities were good. I attended trainings relevant to my projects and my personal interests.

The graduate programme is well structure and is designed to give exposure to different areas in the bank which is very appealing to me. The atmosphere is also great - very collaborative and friendly.
The Culture
There were several events organised by the Early Careers team. I usually went for lunch with other interns and we organised events among ourselves.
It depend on where you stay and commute from. Rent in Edinburgh varies around £500/month. Some interns commute from nearby cities which could cost £100-200/month.
Edinburgh has some nice clubs. I particularly enjoy the Fringe that takes place every August.
I took part in a charity project and there were events organised by graduates and interns.
