The Role
Amazing experience, got put in a team who really wanted to help me succeed and answer all my questions that I had. Especially as I do not have a finance background, it was the best place possible to learn all the basics and it was very enjoyable to be in such an environment.
The first few weeks of the internship were slow as it was spent predominantly reading material with less interaction with colleagues. However, once I had a basic understand I was definitely valued and able to contribute meaningfully to the team. They were all incredibly friendly from day one and helped me settle in too.
Had a buddy who was incredibly sympathetic to questions which was a massive help so I could learn as quickly as possible about the bank, the company and the role. I was given good guidance through the network I built who all showed me their work in the bank and their roles too.
Initially I was not very busy but after getting to grips with the basics of the role I was given a fair amount of work which was intellectually stimulating and exciting. I really enjoyed a lot of it and it was nice to see the impact , no matter how small it was, I was making on the team
Again, initially I had few responsibilities but as the team grew their confidence in me I was given real responsibilites which made a meaningful impact on the team and it was satisfying to see the end result. There were a few medial tasks but they were not a regular occurrence.
At uni I study a subject not related at all to finance but the skills and experience I have gained during this internship is truly remarkable. The speed at which you learn when immersed in a company is amazing and there was no better place to begin learning about finance.
The Company
It was a very friendly office and most people were willing to speak to me during my time there. It was fascination to meet so many people from different backgrounds and it was a great place to work. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone interested in finance.
Very well organised. There were training sessions, organised recruiter catch up and all managers gave interns meaningful work with could add value to the firm. HR were also great at listening to people's ambitions and facilitating people to achieve their potential. The learning sessions from directors were fantastic and insightful.
They amount of time directors spent speaking to us was amazing and there are lots of learning materials available for everyone in the bank to use. There were training sessions too initially which introduced us to the bank. Most useful was a markets training session which gave a good introduction to banking.
Very appealing, you can roll straight into a graduate programme which can take all the pressure off your final year to go job hunting. The incentives to join are great and the staff treat you very well and encourage to succeed and obtain the job offer. It's a great place to start a career.
The Culture
Yes interns regularly go for lunch/ dinner and socialise outside work hours and hr organise a few events for interns to meet each other and enjoy yourself during the week. It's been very fun to meet people in other departments too and I have met a lot of people I will keep in touch with.
I lived at my university halls so it was cheap. The canteen in the office is relatively expensive and canary wharf itself is very expensive to eat out to. The food is very good in that area though and it's worth it during work to motivate you and keep you energised.
There were pubs which were good and a few bars etc.
There was always intern social events going on organised by interns.
