The Role
The work was different every day - a very fast paced environment. Different tasks to do every day, kept it exciting and made the time fly. I learnt a lot of new skills for a corporate environment which I’ll be able to use for any future employment or grad schemes.
Constantly given feedback by my line manager, senior manager, counsellor and even clients. Throughout my time I was praised/given constructive feedback, and at the end my team made me very aware that my work had been valued. They don’t treat you like an intern, you are treated like a colleague.
I received constant feedback on my work and even constructive criticism was delivered in such a way that I wanted to strive to better myself. I wasn’t put down by any negative feedback, as it all comes back as experience. My manager made me aware that even though I was getting suggestions for improvement, that the corporate world is open to interpretation and often there is no right way.
busy, busy, busy. To be perfectly frank, the workload is very heavy. However, I wouldn’t necessarily write this as a negative. Heavy workload means that the day flies in, and you are kept on your toes. Having lots to do is always better than doing nothing- the nature of the work also meant that I wanted to complete it. It was interesting and I wanted to do it all.
You aren’t treated like a stereotypical intern- you don’t run coffees or do non important work. Everything you do has an impact on the wider team- it is constantly reviewed by other members to examine for quality, but really the work you do has value. I created a slide presentation for my manager which was presented to the CFO of my client, with minimal interference by my wider team. Definitely a highlight!
On my first day I created some slides for my manager, who immediately pointed out some key things. Initially I was put down, but then took it on as a learning experience - from that point on, everything I’ve done has come together to make my office skills better. I’ve improved my interpersonal skills through conference calls and meetings with clients, and my communication skills have improved so much since starting.
The Company
A serious environment, but can be a really fun environment when appropriate! Obviously Client Site was a very serious affair (most of the time) but the office was great fun, and full of friendly faces. Everyone is approachable (as I learnt on my first day when I got lost) and everyone is willing to help out.
Student internship programme was so well organised. They have a dedicated team of advisors who send out weekly round up emails to keep everyone up to date. They’re also very speedy with any responses to questions and are approachable and friendly. They organised social events and networking events, and made sure you got the most out of the internship.
I was taught everything I needed to know to perform certain tasks- I was given a lot of feedback and was supported through any problems or questions that I had. A particularsenior consultant would always make time to skype me if I had any questions about a piece of work I was creating for him, and he was genuinely concerned that I learnt as much as possible, rather than rushed through pieces.
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Before I had left my internship I was requested to extend my time- the client even offered to pay for me as a consultant, not an intern! The offer process is very clear cut, and there are so many opportunities to progress within the business - different service lines, different positions etc!
The Culture
Lots of social events were held by my team, and I was always included and made to feel as part of the team. The events held by the Summer internship programme were all fun and meant I made a lot of connections with interns who were in the same boat as me
I worked in London, notorious for the expense - I can’t comment on the cost of living because I stayed with family, but if you have a place to stay in London/family/friends, I would go for it. I’m from Belfast, but the wage for the job more than covers travel expenses to/from Work. Also if you’re on client site, you can generally claim back expenses for extra travel.
Nightlife was great; lots of local bars/food places and fun nights out. London is definitely a great place for a night out.
Plenty of opportunities, especially if in full time employment - however because the internship was 6 weeks, I only got to participate in a few.
