The Role
Overall the experience was great in terms of people and the teams. Of course, it depends what iffice and what team you get asigned to. One does not get any choice what team he gets asigned to even if you have strong preferences. No choice of what work you want to do, it is asigned.
The colleagues in my team valued my work a lot but did not put much pressure on me. I was lucky to get an amzing team manager that appreciated me and wanted me to learn more and get a better view of the projects. The internship takes place in summer when people are on vacation so they need people anyway.
I got great support from the graduate and team manager in my team as they seemed to be very highly motivated individuals keen to nurture new comers. However, I got little support from the official chanels as my councillor (the most important person that defends you in the meeting) was out of the country on vacation for half if the time.
I was as busy as I wanted to be mostly. The programme is fairly not organised so you can find work if you want to. There are some times when noone has work to give you. The business also depends on what prt of the business you are in and what you are good at.
I was given a lot of responsibility In collecting data and drafting first versions of documents. However, all final cersions are double or tripple checked by higher rank people so there is no pressure to get it right on the first time. They can give feedback for you to learn and they do not expect too much
The training and experience will probably nit assist me in further studies at all but any professional interaction taleaches how to grow ones network and perfect ines interpersonal skills. Soft skills are usually more important to have as hard skills can be taught easier. As a services company EY has a lot of people that have great people skills
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office is very chill most of the time. Everyone is relaxed and friendly. If you are not complacent with your work, project or division, however, you need ro speak carefully as people do not like that and may start thinking you dont want to be there at all
The bulk of the internship was not well organised and if you did not take your own initiative you could have spent a couple of weeks without any work. There is little oversight on what you are doing or where yoh are. The orgnisers do not communicate to the councillors effectively
The firm had many training modules but the ones that can be found on the internal recourses are not updated rwgularly. For quality recourses one can look on Udemy among other subscriptions the firm has to external providers. My team, however, was very willing to teach and provide all the information I was interested in
The future prospects are ok but not the best havinv in mind that the mobility within the firm is very limited. If i did end up in the firm it would not be awful as it is not a hard job and with the right skills you can establish your brand quickly
The Culture
The social scene within our subdivision was amazing. The interns got along really well. The first and second year consultants were also really friendly and invited us for drinks and a chat on many occasions. However there were some tht did not belong to the core social circle and did not blend in as well
I lived in central Lindon so it was very expensive. There is no time to coock so need to buy food ouside, that costs a lot and the canteen food in the office is not great. The commute is long and stuffy and expensive. It was also really hard to find accommodation for such short time.
I did not participate in any night life activities besides the iccasional drink in a bar. Generally the Canary wharf area is not famous for its night life. London, however, has places for going out that are quite central as well as night tube on Fridays and Saturdays so it is not a problem
There were some opportunities for activitues outside if work but most of them were not internship wide but iffered to me by the graduate I was working with. Generally, one needs to put in a lot of work asking people about opportunities and none are freely available or advertised openly
