The Role
I really enjoyed my internship overall. EY is a very welcoming company and has great support system in place for each intern which was really helpful! It was a great opportunity to get an insight into the Big 4 and get to take part in a range of tasks and projects.
My colleagues were one of the highlights of the entire internship. EY is great in that no one has an individual office. This is great in that you get a change to work and interact with people on all levels - from juniors all the way up to partners. My colleagues made me feel really welcomed and really made an effort to explain things to me and get me involved as much as possible.
The support systems in place are excellent. Each intern is allocated their own personal Buddy and Counsellor to help guide you throughout your internship. This was a massive help in making me feel comfortable in asking any questions I had. They both checked in regularly with me to see how I was finding things and helped track my progress.
This varied quite a bit. At the start I wasn’t very busy as I still had a lot to learn before I could become involved with things. However, the more work I did the more people involved me in things and I became a lot busier. There weren’t too many time I felt overwhelmed with work. Whenever I did, I felt like it was a good learning experience as it helped me manage deadlines and getting things done.
The amount of responsibility I was given increased throughout my internship. I was always reporting to someone and my work was always checked by people ranked higher than me. However, some of the work I did was very important and would be given to clients so I did have decent level of responsibility.
I feel like I gained a lot of skills that I can apply to my university degree and other jobs I may have in the future. These include attention to detail, timeliness and always producing high quality work. The technical knowledge I learnt was quite specific to my team so it is less universal but still useful.
The Company
Overall I thought the atmosphere was quite good in the office. I think there could have been more social events organised to get to know the team better outside of work. Everyone did seem to get on really well and were very friendly, it never felt too intense or stressful.
Once the internship started, everything was very well organised and structured. We were given specific goals to achieve and had regular meetings with our counsellors which was great. However, the onboarding process was not well organised in my experience. I had to submit the same information multiple times and communication seemed quite poor within the team I was dealing with.
The team did spend a lot of time helping me to understand technical aspects of the work they do. This really helped me make the most of the work I was doing. I think more training could be organised for interns to help understand their specific teams better near the start of the internship.
I’m not sure whether I have an offer yet but they do aim to higher the majority of interns so I feel the prospects are very good if you’re looking to work here in the future.
The Culture
I think this is a definite area for improvement as there were little to no opportunities organised for interns to socialise amongst themselves.
My office was located in London so the cost of living is quite high here! This is no fault of EY though and the canteen and bar onsite are very decently priced.
My office was located in Canary Wharf so there are a lot of bars but I didn’t experience any nightlife.
EY does have a range of activities you can get involved with but it is hard to do during a six - week internship.
