The Role
I really enjoyed my internship in Assurance at EY (in Birmingham). I was able to learn about the different processes that are involved in a detailed audit. I was able to meet a range of different clients and socialise with people from different service lines. A particular highlight was my partner shadow in corporate finance.
All my colleagues, throughout the various clients I was working on, were extremely helpful and understanding. I was explained the purpose of all the tasks I was performing and the reason it will help in the wider picture of the audit. I was set a variety of tasks to learn a wide range of skills. I felt extremely valued.
My colleagues were extremely helpful and understanding. They were open to questions and would always go the extra mile to ensure I knew what I was doing and why I was doing it. They did try to give me a varied experience by setting different work across my time with them.
The workload varied from day to day depending on when certain documents such as invoices were received by the clients. On my most days I was quite busy as my colleagues tried to find things for me to do. Also I worked on fairly big clients with a large amount of subsidiaries so there never seemed to be a lack of work.
I was given a fair amount of responsibility during my internship. I was allowed to personally speak with and request documents from clients. I was also able to upload documents on canvas which were quite important. I was given work to complete in a short space of time which highlights their confidence in me.
I’ve developed my communication skills and I am now able to convey information more concisely. I am also able to manage time far better to ensure all my tasks are completed on time with a high quality. I developed my excel skills which could be useful for me in the future.
The Company
The atmosphere was really great in the office as everyone was helpful and really talkative. They were all willing to help make your journey more pleasant and insightful. Everyone in the office was very hard working which inspired me to work beyond my usual limits. The office was also very clean.
All the events planned by the team were well organised and enjoyable. The partner breakfast was a particular highlight as it was very insightful and nice to see a partner in an informal environment. The summer internship social was a great chance to catch up with the other interns after a long time.
I think they spent a lot of time teaching me to how use excel more efficiently to carry out audit procedures. For example, I learnt how to use vlookups, IF formulas and pivot tables. I was also able to learn how canvas works for future reference if I do need to use it.

Company Parties/Events
I think future employment is very attractive as all my travel was expensed, there were many socials in which I attended and met a variety of people. The process of promotion is very clear and very achievable. I was given information about how the hierarchy works which was very useful.
The Culture
There was a great social scene between the interns and the current staff. All staff were very friendly and were willing to meet during lunch hours for coffee to have a chat about any questions I had. One particular highlight was the social that was organised by the internship team.
