The Role
I came into the internship not knowing a lot about EY or what they do. However coming out of it, it was a wonderful experience showinh a diverse range of services that EY provides whilst being a fun, enjoyable company to work with. The work may not be the best aspect but the wonderful people more than make up for it
At first, i felt quite introverted and didn’t open up much to the other staff. Despite this, i felt quite welcome by everyone in the company who did their best to make me feel comfortable. At the first social, they were wonderful and interesting to talk to and by the end of the first week, everyone felt extremely comfortable to be with.
For the supervisors that i worked with, i never once felt as if I didn’t know what to do. They were very helpful and supportive in helping me to start and were always willing to take time to answer any questions i had whilst working.
Due to it being less of a busy season, the department i worked with had less work than normal. Since we work on an engagement basis, there were periods where you are not booked. However, there is also stuff to do if you ask around. Additionally, i also worked on a more ad hoc basis with an engagement that i was not fully booked on but i had time to help out
During the second week of my internship, i went to a client site to get imporant client data from their network. I initially went with a supervisor but by Thursday i was on my own. It would have been amazing if things hadn’t gone wrong on Friday. However the supervisor were still willing to come and help. I was given lots of responsibility but still supported in fulfilling that role
Whilst the technical skills will not be useful in my current degree in Physics, i plan to return therefore they will be with me for the future. Additionally the most important skill i have received through this internship is being to socialise and interact with a confident manner whether it’s with clients or colleagues
The Company
The office has a very varied atmosphere. There is nothing to stop you from having a quick chat with someone as long as you are both free or even grabbing a quick drink from the breakroom. We even had a mini birthday celebration. However it is important to note it is still an office so keep the noise down :p
There was never any point at which the internship felt disorganised or chaotic. Whilst certain activities may have been long such as induction, it was still very well organised and the activities once you are in the department may be more flexible but it doesn’t feel disorganised. One small note is that we thought we had a pizza social but it ended up being more like nibbles. #PizzaForSIP
There were certain challenges such as presenting to senior members of the company as well as partner shadowing days. We were allowed to sit in on meetings and see how the firm functions at a high level. At the same time, we had access to a wide range of online learning tools and I learnt SQL during my internship and in between work

If i were to get an offer for a job, i would 100 percent take it. EY’s company culture is so fresh and removed from the archaic general view of working within the big 4. The people are amazing and the work is varied. At least in the initial years, career progression is good and whilst talks of side moves between firms are common, I don’t think you should ever move out of EY for a lateral move as the culture is so unique, you’d have to be moving up in order to want to move out
The Culture
As an intern group, we had lunch together whenever we could whether it was in the canteen or moving out of the office to have lunch in the sun. The colleagues there were amazing, always inviting us out after work for a nice relaxing catchup and making sure we had a great time
Being in London, it was not cheap at all however the pay is enough to accomodate for living and socialising. The flexi time also allowed for extreme flexibility in socialising just that london as a whole is quite expensive
I didn’t go to any of the proper nightlife locations around as I am not into that however i was able to spend some times in local bars which were very nice. From colleagues, there is a vibrant scene in london
As mentioned, there were quite a few socials and impromptu get togethers arranged by colleagues at work. As interns, we weren’t around long enough for other events but there have been boat parties, corporate social responsibility days, mini/virtual golf and so much more
