The Role
The work was enjoyable and manageable, the people were friendly and the location was nice.
They were always grateful for my help and would ask me to complete varying levels of tasks for them. I was never asked to be the tea-girl.
I could ask my supervisor for help at any time, and whilst she wouldn't give me the answer on a plate, I would get help as long as I put the effort in first.
Very busy, but got a full hour for lunch and never left later than 6.30pm.
Lots, I would call employment tribunals and was drafting letters to clients.
It helped me realise I didn't want to be a lawyer, but the communication and work ethic skills were invaluable for an office environment.
The Company
Good, everyone was friendly and you could talk to anyone with ease.
Didn't have any problems, all computer accounts etc were set up before I arrived so I didn't have to wait for that.
I was only a week placement, so apart from the experience, there were no training or development opportunities.
If I had decided to pursue a career as a solicitor, I would have been offered a training contract, but I chose it wasn't the career for me.
The Culture
The other placement students were great, but again, it being only a week left little time to socialise.
Southampton is a lovely area, with good housing and socialising opportunities. Shoosmiths are commutable from Portsmouth also.
Southampton and Portsmouth have great bars and restaurants, so there are endless opportunities a few minutes commute away. Good train links.
Sailing and water-sports on your doorstep, the New Forest about 40 mins away for walking and biking. Endless....any sport you could imagine.
