The Role
The work I completed during my internship was challenging but rewarding. As an intern, you weren’t expected to just sit back and send emails, you were given responsibility for real work that would be used in audits. The variety of work surprised me, it wasn’t as repetitive as people say accounting is, and the amount of client exposure and interaction we got was a great experience.
EY have a real focus in people and this really shows in the business. Throughout my internship the office was very social, and teams made an real effort to integrate their interns. Everyone had time for you and the teams were all very close, and you could feel the work you completed was appreciated.
The support system at EY is amazing. We were taken care of the whole way through our internship by student recruitment, we each were assigned a buddy (usually a grad) and a counsellor, who we had 1 on 1 meetings with regularly to check in, arrange a day on another service line and just really enhance our experience. We were even give the opportunity to shadow and interact with partners, who despite being very busy also wanted to make our experience as good as it could be.
During the first couple of weeks I did have some quiet moments throughout the day where I could complete some online training, but most of the time I was very busy. There were constantly jobs to be doing and work that needed completing, so I was never left bored. Some work also had a tight deadline, so you had to work efficiently and not hesitate to ask you team for help.
The level of responsibility I was given during my placement surprised me. I didn’t not think I would be given the opportunity to actually interact face to face with clients, or to be sent with my team from Edinburgh for a 3 day client site visit to London. I was given my own part of the audits to complete and my work would then be reviewed by a manager and then included in the audit. It was a lot more responsibility than I was expecting, but the support you get from you team is great I never felt like I couldn’t complete my work.
The experience was helped me grow professionally, improves my business accumen and developed my interpersonal skills, that will help me going forward into the world of work. Having actual office experience and working for a top global company I think will stand me in good stead for the future, and is great to have real working examples to talk about in future interviews.
The Company
The office was incredibly social. Everyone would chat, plan social such as donut days, breakfast meetings, Friday drinks trolly and more. Everyone was so nice, it was easy to interact will everyone, from grads up to partners. The office was far more relaxed than I was expecting for a big 4 company.
The summer internship programme was very well organised. It seems that EY as a business have such a well develop internship programmes - you are taken care of from start to end, given loads of opportunities and they want to help you succeed any way they can.
EY really care about the development of their employees. Many of the grads had been sent to London for training days and we are encouraged to complete online training when we have free time. There is also development opportunities through the work you complete, with more responsibility given to the interns the further we got through our internship.
I went into my internship not knowing what to expect, or if I would even enjoy working in an office for such a big business. Since completing the placement it has made me want to work for the business more, you get a sense they really care about you and you don’t get lost in the big corporate mass of people.
The Culture
Outside of the actual work I undertook, we were given the opportunity to take part in a charity day, fundraising in the office, after work socials, and there were even sports days arranged. There is always lots going on for people to get involved in, there was even a social committee that had meeting every few weeks.
