The Role
The internship was a fantastic experience. I really enjoyed working alongside the team and getting to meet everyone. The work was enjoyable and the team welcoming. I travelled to multiple cities attended social events and had a fantastic time working for EY in Edinburgh. If you get the opportunity to join EY take it
The team made me feel very valued. I was always invited to events and socials which they were attending and small things like always being invited to join the team for lunch made the experience so much easier. I was always given work to perform and given review of how it would be used in the business so I knew I was having an impact
The team are all very supportive. When given a task I would usually sit with a member of the team and be given a walk through or what needed to be done, how to do it and if I had any questions to feel free to ask. Also you are given a buddy and a counsellor who are very helpful with any issues
Most working days I was very busy.At time there can be a lull in work but it is important to be proactive and request work from the team as they will always be happy to take something off their plate. There is also many opportunities to try and get involved in work not directly included in your service line which I took advantage of
I feel I was given a high level of responsibility but also monitored enough to not feel like I was being left to struggle. All work is sent to multiple levels of review therefore no mistakes you make will go out to a client and a senior member of staff will give you comments to address.
The skills I took were relevant to assisting me in writing a dissertation in my fourth year and gave me a good idea of what I could write about. I feel I go back to university with a better idea of what an employer values and what to focus on during my last year at university
The Company
The general atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. The office is casual with very few people wearing ties unless they are attending a client meeting. The team I was in are very conversational and had lunch together and made me feel very welcome and always asked questions about what I was doing how my weekend was etc
The placement is extremely well organised and the student recruitment team communicate regularly and keep you informed about what is going on in your process. The recruitment team organised my travel from Scotland to London booking my trains and accommodation and ensure upon arrival I had a buddy and counsellor set up who assisted me in my time here
I feel the firm is very happy to invest in interns as they hope many will join the firm as graduates after finishing university. There are training events which give you basic knowledge of what to do and how to work the equipment with your own team in the office helping you to learn how to perform tasks
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
The main draw of working for EY is probably the opportunity for rapid promotion and the gaining of experience with working alongside some of the largest companies in the world. I think the opportunity to go far and fast are highly appealing. Also being put through professional exams is a huge bonus
The Culture
I spoke to many of the other interns and we always spoke if seeing each other in the office. I spent most of my time with my own team rather than with the other interns as they made me feel very welcome and I felt comfortable to sit with them for lunch etc
I stayed at home so unsure of the cost of living. As for social events the costs are average. Edinburgh is not the cheapest of cities to go out in but prices are not too bad. Every social I attended was provided by EY and therefore I spent very little outside train travel
Never attended
We were always emailed invites to social events so getting involved was very easy
