    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed acquiring new skills and actually getting to do some real work in a professional services company. Interns get put to work from day one and that’s definitely positive. I have also enjoyed the culture and how people, no matter their level in the firm, are approacheble and friendly.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Colleagues were nice and friendly and valued my collaboration. Seniors on the job made sure I was clear on what I had to do and kept me in the loop. At the end of each assignment I was thanked for my help and always involved in every aspect of the audit.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Most of support and guidance came from my counsellor. He was really nice and met with me theee times over six weeks. He made sure everything was ok and was always available in case of necessity. He showed deep interest for our welfare and integration in the firm. Most senior managers and partners also took the time to speak to us.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This varied depending on the assignment and the client I was working on. Some days were incredibly busy, especially if a deadline was approaching, others were far slower, which is to be expected from audit as a profession.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was assigned tasks of different size, starting with quite small to more significant towards the end of the six weeks of my internship. I was responsible for my own work and for completing it in a timely manner. It is also good to show progress by demonstrating you are listening and learning along the way since you’ll be asked to complete similar tasks more than once. Hence it’s bad if they have to walk you thought it again. However, the final responsibility for the completed audit will never be on an intern and all your work will be reviewed by a senior.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I definitely think that improved hard skills such as better knowledge of excel will help me in my future career and studies. I have also acquired better communication skills and gained an improved understanding of what’s like to work in a professional setting. All of this will be applied later on in my career.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Atmosphere in he office was really good. People are very friendly and keep very much in touch with each other. Social events are very frequent and accomplishments by anyone in the firm are usually celebrated office wide. Even when people are leaving onto a different jobs they still received acknowledgement and a leaving speech/ celebration.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Was well organised and updates were shared throughout the process. EY deals with a massive amount of applications and people so understandably replies are not instantaneous and mistakes can and do happen. They however do try their best to provide each and every intern with a good experience and make sure they don’t feel alone.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Lots of effort put into initial induction followed by IT induction as well. That was well run and organised. People on the job in your office also make sure to be available and are willing to answer you might have. So overall the firm does invest a lot, in different ways, to provide interns with training.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very. EY is definitely a firm I am considering for my career and for my life after university. I am extremely attracted to the multitude of opportunity they offer and to the diverse paths you can pursue within the firm. However I don’t think the same emphasis happens in every office. Bigger offices have definitely a wider focus and benefit more than small offices.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yeah we got along all pretty well and have bonded over shared experience. However we have all been in different jobs so most of the time you’ll be working with professionals rather than the other interns which is good. We also came together for social events and CSR events which we run together.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Was alright, same city as where I go to uni so nothing unexpected.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife is ok but the city isn’t very big.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes and no. Company runs clubs and activities but work is also very demanding so it’s hard to strike to work and life balance, especially at the start.
