The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working for EY. In terms of the work itself it wasn’t the most exciting and frequently there wouldn’t be work for us so we could sit for hours watching training videos etc. However the people I met were all lovely, everyone treated us with respect and friendliness, and the 6 weeks I had were great.
This was one of if not the best part of the internship. Everyone at EY I met really emphasised that we were important to them and tried to treat us as equals. They took interest in me professionally and personally and really made an effort to make sure we knew we were valued.
This was a poorer aspect of the job. My counsellor was a lovely guy and every time I met with him he was really nice and you could tell he cared about us. However, the majority of the time he was too busy with work to give us proper guidance on what we were to do or how to do it. I felt that all of our meetings were somewhat rushed so he could get back to work. The student team were good for the week we joined etc but during the placement they didn’t keep us in the loop much. I had one phone call with a member of the student team but it felt forced to be honest.
This was mixed - some days I would be thrown lots of work to do and others I would sit for hours with nothing. I would say out of the 6 weeks I worked (total working days of around 25) there was about 7/8 days were I sat with nothing for the full day.
I was given tasks to complete but all tasks were admin kind of tasks and didn’t have much weight. On one client I was given a bit more responsibility and even sat with a client on my own, but the majority of the time I would say my tasks would be checked and redone by the senior. This is understandable though as in this industry quality of work is vital for the business.
I feel like the biggest thing I will take away from this internship is the people skills I have developed. Speaking to professionals every day for 6 weeks was great experience and I feel going forward in my career in university and in industry the skills I have learned from this internship will be greatly beneficial.
The Company
Everyone was really friendly and the atmosphere was great. Everyone worked hard but also had time for each other and socialised which was great. I never felt intimidated by anyone there and was never afraid to ask for help or approach someone to talk.
To be honest not well. We never really had one supervisor to go to for tasks etc so we were stuck at times looking for tasks. Each team I was on I would just have to source somebody to give me work. And the counsellors/buddies weren’t really involved in what we done day to day.
They invested a lot. There was a lot of learning videos which was good. It really helped me gain an understanding of how the firm was. Everyone who helped me really invested their time into making sure I knew what I was doing.
Very promising. Apparently the vast majority of people who complete the summer internship get offered the grad role. They are very keen to keep their interns after investing so much in them.
The Culture
The social scene was pretty good. There was arranged events etc.
Aberdeen was expensive.
It was alright. Lots of pubs etc but the prices were high.
There was emails about charity events and lots of emails about socials so this was good.
