The Role
My time at EY was certainly an enjoyable experience. When my seniors had work available to give me, I performed genuine audit work and felt I contributed to the team. However, sometimes when I did not have work, it was tedious and boring. However, this is not a huge negative as it is to be expected.
All of my colleagues where very kind and supportive during the internship. They made a concious effort to provide me with genuine work and extra care was taken to educate me on the general audit procedures and how to execute all tasks. They also appreciated the work that I performed.
The support I was given was extremely valuable and effective in helping me develop my skills. The seniors where all more that willing to provide assistance and support, helping me to understand both how and why I was to perform a task. Management where also willing to take time to have long conversations with me, despite their busy schedule.
As mentioned previously, the team made a concious effort to ensure that I was given genuine work for most of my internship. Despite this, there was unavoidable periods where I sat unassigned to a task. During this time I was given access to the firms online learning site, which helped me develop my skills.
I feel I was given an expected level of work during my internship. I was given audit tasks to perform and was left to complete them independently. Due to the nature of the work, all tasks had to be signed off by my supervisor, but this was to be expected due to the industry.
Regarding skills, my time at EY allowed me to greatly develop my excel skills that I will apply in later life. This ranged from shortcuts to speed up my work to formulas and methods of laying out data so it can be interpreted easier. This will certainly be useful in my later career.
The Company
The office was a very friendly, bright and open atmosphere. Everybody was more than willing to provide support and assistance, whether that be relating to work or finding something. Whilst everybody was clearly very busy, they also gave you time if you needed help. The Manchester office was also very modern and stylish.
The internship was effectively organused, with the interns being assigned to actual audit work on site with more senior members of the team. They also considered the travel availability and tried to provide you with a short commute when working off site. Whilst occasionally I was unnasigned, this was never for more than a day.
The company invested a great deal in me, allowing me to perform actual work that would be expected from another of their employees. They where also willing to invest their time in creating a large support network of counsellors and buddy's to help you with any queries relating to your internship.

Very, the firm offers multiple opportunities for promotion as well as paying for you to complete your Chartered Accountant training. The nature of EY is also very appealing to other company, and the experience looks very appealing on CVs, allowing you to leave at a later date. This thus creates very appealing prospects.
The Culture
Multiple socials where arranged for the interns across the 6 week program. This allowed you to social and discuss your experiences with people in a similar position to you. Additionally, socials where arranged with other members of the firm, with partner breakfasts being arranged to talk to senior members in an informal setting.
The cost of food in Manchester is similar to that of any city. Whilst cheaper than London, is was still more expensive than other surrounding areas. Luckily, the salary is competitive, allowing this price to be matched. I also feel thay socialising is rather expensive, but no more than a similarly large city
Good, many clubs and bars are available in the city center and surrounding areas
Yes, there is opportunities to take part in sports teams and the firms employees are more than happy to take you out for food/ drinks
