The Role
I really enjoyed the work I was in. I particularly enjoyed learning new skills and applying them to actually help clients in the various ways. I however did find at times there was not enough work to be doing and no one had things to give me and I found myself bored
I was very impressed by the way I was treated by everyone at EY. I was only a summer interns and I had heard rumours of other firms not treating interns so well. This however was not the case. I felt valued a respected by everyone and everyone was eager to teach me things I didn't know
My counsellor checked in on me most days and was always available to give me work or chat if I had any problems. J also sat next to my buddy most days and we really got on. He showed me the basic ropes and made sure I attended social events
The work varied from day to day. I was given a few ongoing projects. But the majority of the work was given on that day. I found myself some days looking at my watch once the entire day. Whereas on others I found myself bored and watching the clock for a few hours
I was given very little responsibility. Which was an tandem with the amount I knew. I did not feel like I was ready to take on responsible roles. Having said this, whoever gave me the work let me get on with it and figure things out while keeping an eye out and reviewing intermittently
I gave this a 5 because the technical skills I used will not be used in my degree as I am studying biomedical materials science. Having said this, I felt it taught me invaluable life skills about the importance of networking and teaching me about the office as well as becoming more fluent in some computer software
The Company
So positive. There were people in the office who were always up for a laugh. However they always knew that the work comes first. I feel like there was a great balance between everyone enjoying themselves and everyone working hard. This made for a really good atmosphere conducive to both work and fun
I was given a timetable of everywhere I had to be on the first day. This was very accurate and everyone was informed that i was going to be there. Student recruitment were also constantly in contact with me, organising socials and other fun events. This meant I never felt alone in a big firm
Everyone took time out of their day to ensure that I understood all the concepts and I was surpised that people were willing to stop what they were doing just so they could teach me a small skill. However I think there is only so much they can invest over 6 weeks. But they were very focused on my development
Very good
The Culture
Yeah the social scene was absolutely amazing. Within the first few weeks. We had been out with the team every Thursday. Everyone was will willing to drink and have a really good time. I was also happy because the senior people were often willing to pay for drinks. Love that.
I am giving this one a five as well because I lived at home for the entire time and therefore living cost wasn't an issue. Pints were cheap and ey paid whenever we went out anyway so that did not matter. I got the metro link in every morning. That could have been cheaper
The nightlife is good however I am from manchester and I found myself going out with a lot of my freinds from home as well as the ones that I had made whilst working and the firm which was EY. The night life in Manchester is really good though. I love it
Not really
