The Role
I think it was definitely a learning experience, as when I applied I was not too sure about what assurance really was. The internship gave me a better understanding of what assurance is, as I was able to work on real client work and actually make a difference for the client.
As an intern, I expected to not be valued too much. To an extent, this is what happened as my seniors were usually quite busy so weren't always able to answer my questions. Sometimes I felt like I was just being given work for the sake of it, but they did help as much as they were able to, given their own tasks that they had to do.
My seniors were helpful at times but if they were busy, less support was given. However this was understandable and when they did get time, they would answer my questions and help me with my work. I had regular contact with my counselor which meant if I had any queries I could always ask him.
This depended from day to day. During the first week, I was not very busy at all, as I was in the office and there was not a lot of work to do. However, when I was on client site for the next 5 weeks, I usually always had some work to do.
I was not given much responsibility as an intern which I think was quite understandable. However, this did not mean I was given meaningless tasks. It just meant that I would always have to check back with my senior about the work I had done, to make sure it was right.
I think the skills developed will massively help me in my degree. I have developed my networking skills immensely and feel like this can translated to university life as I can form better relationships with people now. I have gotten better at Excel too which can be used in my modules.
The Company
The office was usually busy as people would just get on with the work they had. People were always friendly and offered to get you a drink if they were going to get one. Everybody was helpful however I think people tended to sit in the same places every day so everybody interacted with the same people on a day to day basis.
I believe it was quite well organised. The fact that there was a partner shadow was really nice and it was very insightful. We were booked to client sites so we would always know where we would be on which week. Therefore I would say it was well organised and well put together.
I think the company invested a lot into us. The student recruitment team made sure to take out time to have a catch up call with us halfway through the internship which was helpful. There were also a lot of socials so the company invested a lot into helping us network better.
EY has a lot of great people and there is so much to learn. It is a great company with a good reputation and so many teams so there is a lot to get involved in. This means it is really easy to develop a variety of different skills which can help in the future.
The Culture
All the other interns were very friendly and we all attended the socials, which were very regular so this meant that the social scene was good. The socials were always fun activities and well thought out which was a bonus. The other colleagues were always friendly and treated us like equals.
I lived at home so the cost of living was quite cheap. Manchester is a big city therefore the socialising in the area was really good. The cost of travel was quite expensive sometimes but if you are on client site this is all reimbursed so it is quite good.
The night life in Manchester is always really good and there is always lots of different things to do so you can never be bored in Manchester. The costs are not too high either so money is not really a big issue. However, due to working on weekdays, I did not experience the nightlife on weekdays.
For interns there were not too many activities to get involved in. There were quite a lot of socials though which surprised me a lot. They were quite regular and were always really fun activities that were well thought out. I think the socials were a good way to reunite with interns.
