The Role
I really enjoyed my internship. I had lots to do all the time and if I didn't I always felt I could go to my line manager and ask for more. I felt like I had a great deal of responsibility and like what I was doing had a purpose.
My team was really friendly and we were encouraged to meet one-to-one with everyone so we felt more comfortable around the team. I had regular contact with lots of people in the team as I was responsible for getting their content on the site so they felt I was valuable to the work that they were doing.
I had weekly meetings one-to-one with my line manager. In these meetings we discussed what I have been up to and what I can do next. In addition to this, I was always able to approach my manager at their desk or via email if I needed help with something.
Most days my calendar had a perfect balance of meetings and time to spend working on the objectives I had been given. In addition, there were regular intern sessions organised. Occasionally there were days where I did not have much to do but I would always find something so I wasn't bored.
I think that I was given enough responsibility so that I felt like there was a reason for me being there. I think I would've felt uncomfortable with too much responsibility. The level of responsibility I was given also made me feel like I had a purpose in the team.
This internship will be really helpful towards my degree, especially as the content of one of my modules overlaps with the type of job. In addition to content, I have improved my confidence and I am also much better at managing my time and responding to emails in a timely manor.
The Company
Everyone in my team was really friendly and always up for a chat - whether it was work related or not. However, outside of my team I found that people didn't really interact with one another very much. This didn't ruin the atmosphere though, it was still a great atmosphere.
The internship was really well set up. Before arriving we were assigned a Line Manager, Buddy and Mentor, all of whom have been crucial to my time on the internship. In addition, the training was done really well and to a high level and we have regular catch ups with HR.
At the start of the internship we had 2 days of intense training with all 450 or so interns across the business. In addition, we have mid-term and end-term catch ups to ensure we are getting out of the internship what we want to. A lot of time and money was spent on ensuring we developed in our time there.

At the end of the internship we have a catch up with the human resources team where they decide whether you have a job with them starting the following year or not. I think it is more likely than not that you will be offered a job (obviously conditional on how well you performed!).
The Culture
I got on really well with the other interns and we met up a few times a week for social activities after work. This ranged from having meals/drinks together, watching the world cup, watching outdoor cinema shows and going to clubs. Everyone was really similar so we got on really well.
It was relatively expensive but if you plan ahead it isn't too bad - especially if you're getting paid well during the internship. Planning ahead for me included getting the bus instead of the tube, packing lunch rather than buying out and going to cheaper bars rather than the most expensive.
The nightlife was great. On a Friday or Saturday there was always a lot going on.
I was involved in a project called LifeSkills where Barclays employees go out to schools and community centres and teach them all about the world of work. This included knowing more about taxes, how to write a CV, how to find a job and more. I found this really rewarding.
