The Role
The work conducted was enjoyable and I was treated like the other colleagues rather then a intern which is nice. Due to obvious reasons the work that you do is not going to be particularly difficult so can be repetitive. The higher up you get the more interesting it becomes.
I felt very valued by the colleagues and this was major contributing factor towards why I enjoyed my internship as much as I did. I would recommend getting involved in as many social activities as possible as it allows you to develop a bond with members of the team and ensures they will remember you after you leave (greater chance of grad job).
My buddy and counsellor manager were great in being there and supporting me on any issues or problems I had which was nice. All the managers I worked with were supportive and helpful with advice on what it actually is that I am testing for. This is crucial for future development.
At the start I was on client site for 90% of my time at which point I always had something to do. However, a few of the weeks the client were quite small or pulled out and I was based in the office with not much to do. This can get quite boring and is difficult to find stuff to do.
I was able to do majority of the tasks which having spoken to some of the graduates they hadn't either done. This I believe is on a case by case situation as I had a more accounting background. Majority of the tasks will be quite straightforward as at this early stage you don't know enough about it to be to do the harder work.
The skills I received have definitely made me more confident in working in a professional capacity. I have been able to develop my communication skills as often I was engaging with the client and asking for documents. In this situation it is imperative to be concise in what you ask for.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was great. Everyone in audit was friendly about helping you and understanding you are new and quite nervous about what they are asking for. Being a very client based role you don't often be in the office that much which is a shame as by the end you cherish the time you do get in the office. That is just the nature of the role.
The internship was very well organised. There was set procedure on what you would be working on from the start. However, occasionally if a client pulls out then you may have a very dull week. In which case it is up to you to go and find work. The internship will be as good as you make it.
There was hardly any learning electronically with majority of the learning happening on the job. This can be daunting but is the best way to learn the skills needed to complete the audit role. The initial days were very full on and can be tough to take it all in so perhaps having a extra training day and just spacing it out.
They do provide graduate jobs and as long as you have not messed up you will get the job.
The Culture
The social scene was great often there was stuff happening like nights out, football tournament amongst other events. You can always try and organise something that you are interested in.
Living at home while I was work meant that I did not have a high cost of living. Socialising was quite cheap. Normally everyone will understand that you are a student and will be willing to go somewhere slightly cheaper. Advice would be too make the most of the free socials provided.
Nightlife was great as there were many clubs and bars in Birmingham to go out in.
There were several opportunities to get involved outside it all come down to how much effort you would like put into it. If an activity isn't being done you can organise it yourself.
