The Role
I did really enjoy the internship. In the 6 weeks I was there, I was exposed to a multitude of experiences including going to multiple client sites. I got given a lot of responsibility as an intern and it gave me the experiences that I needed to decide whether this industry was for me.
The employees at BDO are extremely approachable and friendly. The office in audit is made up of primarily young colleagues which I believe made it more personal as they have recently been through what an intern is currently perusing. They were really helpful on the job and were keen to answer any questions I had about the graduate scheme.
Once joining BDO, I was assigned a counselling manager and a buddy. They were both really approachable and I got to know them quite personally throughout the internship. They were there to answer any questions or concerns that I had at any time throughout the course of the internship. Highly recommended.
The job was extremely varied throughout my time here. Some days were quite quiet where I had to go seeking work from managers to keep busy and other days I had sufficient work to get me through the day. I was told early on however, that this time of year is a quiet period for them.
I was given a lot of responsibilities throughout my internship. When visiting client sites, my work was actually contributing to the overall audit. It makes you feel confident and appreciated early on. Of course there were some photocopying jobs etc, but I was given a lot more responsibilities than I expected.
I think that it will assist me in my degree because I now know what to expect when going in to a grad role after the degree. It will be a lot less worry for me as I have a bit of experience in this environment. It will also closely match some of my modules in my final year.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was really fun. BDO put on a constant stream of social events for the staff. This is included in the training that the internship has. The office held events once a month were it was a social for the staff to have some food and to be able to socialise outside of work.
The internship was well organised. They hosted a variety of training events that were quite helpful when starting the job. This included a lot of social events and team building events that were held for the interns to get to know each other and feel a lot more confident. Highly recommended,
They invested a lot. We had 4 days in Birmingham all together training for the job as well as induction processes in the local offices. The support and training didn't stop however, because there was a constant stream of support throughout from the buddy, counselling manager and people on the teams that I was part of.

The future employment prospects are really appealing. A partner interview was conducted at the end to talk about a potential future career at BDO. They make you feel like they really want you to succeed and be a part of their team. They also offer a lot of good benefits like the qualification that comes with the grad programme.
The Culture
There was a really good social scene. A constant stream of socials were being organised including drinks in the office, meals out etc. The training events that are held are also full of good socials that are unique and interesting.
Southampton is a great area to live. There are good places to eat all around. The office is based in a really nice area of the city by the marina.
The nightlife is good fun. There are a lot of bars, restaurants and clubs within walking distance of the office.
There were plenty. They had a football tournament hosted in Manchester that everyone could go to. As well as local stuff that gets organised in the office.
