The Role
I found the internship to be a very enjoyable experience the company makes a lot of effort to include you in social events and to make you feel as though you are welcome within the workplace. Although on the whole the work itself is not particularly fulfilling and there were times where there was nothing for me to do.
I felt respected by all of my colleagues and everyone was more than happy to help with any issue I had, with regards to feeling valued as an inter n you are limited in what you can do and everything you do must be reviewed so the extent to which one can feel valued is limited.
Management are extremely friendly and I was confident that I could go to my manager with any problem I had and I would be respected and they would help me. They give you a 'buddy' who is a junior within the company who is always on hand to help with any queries.
This varied greatly from week to week, on some weeks I would have work to do throughout the day however there were some weeks where i was not allocated a client to work on so I would spend a lot of time asking managers for work often to no avail.
It seems as though you have responsibility at times when you are put on a worksheet by yourself and it feels good to be independent. However it is very important to remember that any work that you do will be reviewed before it is used or presented to a client
I don't think particularly think any of the skills learned will help at all in terms of studying for my degree. That being said I have gained a lot of knowledge on finance and the inner workings of large companies and I think this experience will be extremely beneficial to me when it comes to furthering my career
The Company
Theres only so much fun you can have in a professional financial services company however I was surprised at how fun and friendly the BDO office was considering the size of the company. Everyone from the juniors all the way to the managers was friendly, chatty and willing to help.
For the most part it was organised well, all interns are introduced to each other with and there were a lot of socials organised to induct us into the company. The only aspect where organisation was poor was when it came to putting me on jobs as a lot of the time i had nothing to do.
Company Parties/Events
I think that I would certainly work at BDO in the future as I think you would really struggle to find a large financial services company that makes such a larger effort to make people feel welcome and puts such high importance on the happiness and wellbeing of its employees.
The Culture
There were many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work and managers and buddies were very ken to get me involved in these activities. I attended a number of social events in my six weeks including the pub after work and a national 5 a side football tournament with all the offices across the country
