The Role
I very much enjoyed my placement here sat BDO, and I got a real taste for what life is like working in a professional services firm. The atmosphere of the company was really warm and welcoming, with all colleagues willing to support me whenever I needed help, They also offer a variety of social events that helped break the ice and build team morale.
Everyone at the firm who I spoke to or interacted with was really nice and welcoming, and willing to help with any issues or questions I had. All staff from trainees and interns all the way up to partners were really down to earth and made me feel at home from day one.
Managers were always happy to help with any questions, no matter what it was about. In the induction week we were told there was no such thing as a 'silly questions' so it made me feel less guilty about asking about something that would seem very basic to those higher than me.
For the majority of my days at work at BDO my time was filled with various client work, allowing me to engage with both office based work and travelling to client sites. For those times when there was no work supplied by clients, we were encouraged to ask managers and seniors for any work that needed doing to fill the time.
The majority of the work I carried out was service charge work for 2 different clients. This was a basic and fairly straightforward piece of work which was easy to pick up after a day or two. I also carried out calling and casting work, which was once again quite basic.
I developed a lot of the strengths I believe I have, which helped build my confidence as I grew into the role. This will further help me beyond my degree and work, as communication skills for example are important in every aspect of life. The training on Audit I received would set me up very well for a career in Audit.
The Company
The atmosphere was very welcoming and made me feel like part of the BDO family. All people in the office treated me like they'd want to be treated and there were a lot of characters and personalities. Getting to know your colleagues better at social events was very fun and was less pressured than in the formal office environment.
We were given pre-joining instructions before starting the internship which set out what we'd be doing on each day of the induction week and the final two days in London. During the weeks inbetween, we were given an online planner that set out what clients we'd be working on each day and week.
BDO invested a lot of time and money into all the interns, making us all feel valued and like they really wanted us to be there and part of the firm in the future. We were given various training days and e learning modules, and also talking to senior colleagues who took time out their busy schedules to help us develop.

Future employment prospects are very appealing within the company, with a range of opportunities available, especially after becoming a qualified accountant. The pay and benefits on offer make it appealing to progress and work hard to make the most of your time within the company. I would highly recommend BDO.
