The Role
I enjoyed my 6 week internship very much. It was educational and fun. Lots of good social activities throughout and plenty of opportunities to do community service days, work at clients offices, work with different streams such as tax etc. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in accounting.
Although some of us have literally no prior experience, we were highly valued within our office and the wider BDO community. People often came to us for help with their work or an extra hand at a client site and the work we did was actually important to both BDO and the clients.
Firstly I would like to talk about the buddy scheme. This is where each intern is assigned a ‘buddy’ who is usually a nearly qualified accountant in their office. They are always there to ask questions to and even get to know before the internship. Council managers are also extremely supportive.
Due to the internship being in their quiet season sometimes there was a struggle to find work to do. When you were out at a a clients office it was great and there was lots for us to do however in the office I ended up doing a lot of photocopying and general admin.
I was very surprised at the level of responsibility we were given. Even from the start we were given real life projects to do valued work on and were left to do this independently (with support if needed though) which was really good. I don’t think you would get this at many other places.
BDO take on people from a variety of backgrounds. For me, when I do accounting modules next year I’m sure I’ll be a step ahead of everyone else! For beyond university this internship has helped me prepare for real life work and future interviews. It has also helped improve my confidence.
The Company
It was great. Everyone was lovely, relaxed and friendly. You felt as though you were in a lovely environment which is not usually the case at a place of work. The open plan are is a great idea with partners being just a seat away from trainees! It was great.
The first 4 days in Birmingham were very organised from the hotel to all the various activities and timetabled things. We knew exactly where we had to be and at what time and this really helped to make us all feel comfortable. The rest of the internship was just as organised !
Everyone even the partners were invested in me. They truely cared about my development from learning the basic it systems used to understanding a balance sheet or profit and loss statement. They also told me (proven when I talked to trainees) about how much they care in the future.
So many opportunities such as secondments abroad and to other sectors and offices within the uk. Clear promotion opportunities showed within the office. Lots of talks about this too which is really good and educational. Go to one of their insight days to see for yourself, I would reccomend them!
The Culture
Absolutely. We did many social activities with the other interns such as boat parties, laser tag, go carting, escape rooms etc. These were all organised and payed for, it’s great. There’s also BDO socials for everyone such as the annual football tournament that you are really encouraged to join in!
I was in Southampton and had a uni house already sorted so I didn’t really have an issue. The housing here is quite cheap compared to the most of the south of England and so is quite reasonable especially considering the pay you get here. Don’t let this put you off!
Insane. Go to jesters. Go to oceana. Go to sobar. There are two universities in Southampton so night life is pretty good and not too expensive especially if you go on a student night! You can easily walk to most places from either the clubs in the town centre eg switch or in portswood eg sobar or jesters.
Mentioned already.
