    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship itself was enjoyable and there was plenty of opportunity to seek out other areas of the bank, albeit done so on your own accord. To make it more so, there should be more opportunity to integrate with both the fellow interns and your own team, to ensure you feel part of the organisation.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues made me feel valued, although the actual work some would give me would make me question this. Instead of doing tasks that were important, they more gave me the ones they wouldn't want to do. If there had been more appreciation of my knowledge at university then I would feel more valued.

    3/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There was plenty of support my management and there were even graduates who you could speak to if you have an issue. Although I never felt I needed much in the way of support, I would have felt comfortable in asking for it and would not have hesitated to do so.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Whilst there were ongoing projects to carry out, I never felt swamped with work and if I wasn't going to finish. The workload did ramp up in the last week but that was mainly due to deadlines. Never felt as if I couldn't take my lunch/ breaks because of workload.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Understandingly, I was never given tasks which could impact the bank massively nor was any work not ever checked over by someone before being sent off/up. Whilst I was not expecting to be running the show, giving interns the sense of importance or showing them the impacts of the work would be helpful.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I would say that the skills have had little to no impact on my degree studies as there would be little overlap. However, for my career and further work there were invaluable skills, advice and support. It was nice that I wasn't learning too specifically about HSBC, but wider focus on the financial industry.

    3/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • General atmosphere was great, and it never felt boring/dull. Some days there was next to no one in the office, and this could become difficult. Given the same responsibility to work from home on these days would have been appreciated and would make me feel like a true part of the team.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship team were well organised, although some of the development days felt a little mismatched and there were sessions thrown in to spend the time. Whilst there was never any days where I didn't have any work, it would have been nice for the direct team to have pre-organised a few things.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I did feel invested in, although would have appreciated any form of events throughout the working week where there was a chance to socialise with the wider areas of HSBC. Additionally, I do feel like I have developed over the 8 weeks, thanks to the company and look forward to further development.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • National Travel

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Healthcare/Dental

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Whilst I can not leave a 10 rating as I haven't received offer or notice of the grad scheme at time of writing, the prospects within the company for the future are fantastic. One of the small but important aspects is them informing you of your future in September, nearly a year in advance.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social scene was fantastic when there was events in Birmingham, as I was the only intern in my team, I only saw the fellow interns 3 times. This is no fault of the bank and merely a negative of my specific placement. This would not be an issue in a larger city.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • N/A - I lived at home and merely spent what I would have done otherwise with friends from outside of the internship. However, I'm aware that for others it was very expensive and their entire salary was spent on living/ socialising and maybe some consideration should be made for them.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • N/A - Same as the comment above, I went out with my friends from home and made no change in this because of my internship. However if I was the only intern in a city that I didn't live in, this would have been a low rating, although is no reflection on the bank.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Due to the location of my placement, there was less opportunities than those based in Birmingham or canary wharf for example but again this is merely a result of the amount of interns based there. Again, no fault of the bank but maybe a network could be set up with contact details.
