The Role
It would have been better if there had been an organised meet and greet type event with all of the other vac schemers and trainees, or perhaps an organised meal out or something with the department you were working with to get to know the staff better.
Everyone was very welcoming, but I was not given much real work to do my the solicitors and partners and so I did at times feel that I was being a bit useless to the firm.
My trainee was excellent at providing me feedback and discussing the various tasks with me.
I worked my way through the given tasks fairly quickly and was only given a few tasks to do by solicitors/partners and so I wasn't that busy until he end of the week when I was preparing my presentation
I was only given a couple of pieces of real work and so felt that I did not get given much responsibility.
The vacation scheme was a worthwhile experience, and I definitely improved my communication and formal writing skills.
The Company
It was a professional environment, but the trainees all seemed to get on well together and all of the staff were welcoming.
I was given tasks to do in a folder on my arrival and a presentation to do on the last day. It was fairly well organised except for the fact that the majority of what I was doing was not 'real' work.
I was given very good feedback on how to improve on the various tasks that I did.
I really wanted a job with the firm after my vacation placement, but unfortunately following the assessment centre I was ultimately rejected.
The Culture
None of the trainees seemed to socialise outside of work hours. A couple ate together at lunch time, and everyone chatted when passing in the offices but people tended more to do their own thing. With regards to the other placement students, we all ate together at lunch times and got on really well and enjoyed discussing our experiences.
I did not socialise on my placement as there was no organised activity to do so. However I live nearby and I know that the cost of living is fair.
I did not experience any of the nightlife on my placement.
There was no opportunity to get involved in any activity outside of work.
