The Role
The internship was a very exposing experience, as I learnt something new everyday on the job. I enjoyed the challenge of working on live bond transactions, deal origination pitches and undertaking in-depth research. I really enjoyed meeting incredibly smart people from around the world and immediately being inspired. I also enjoyed the flat structure of the organisation, as seniors and juniors are able to communicate seamlessly across the floor.
I felt extremely valued and was given huge responsibilities from the onset, which allowed me to appreciate my role in the bigger picture. That made me feel very important to the teams I worked with. Seeing analysis and insights I had put together in client pitches and on live deals was extremely satisfying.
Anyone who gives you a job is on hand to offer clarification to the extent that you apply yourself. They are always willing to teach curious minds and offer guidance wherever needed. It was important to be mindful of their time as well since they were super-busy most of the time.
I was very busy on most days from start to finish. There is always enough work to go around, so it is very important to be proactive to forge relationships with people that could lead to more projects that you could work on. There will be days where you have much less to do and that is when you need to reach out to people to offer help, which keeps you busy.
A lot of responsibility. This was the case because I showed that willingness to do more all the time, which people appreciate a lot. As an intern, having the right attitude is key, and allows the people you work with to trust you more with important client tasks for deliverables. I was trusted a lot by my teams which is something I really enjoyed about the internship
I have a far more practical understanding of finance which makes theoretical studies that much easier and relatable. Having worked in such an intense, fast-paced environment, I believe I have what it takes to succeed in any other similar environment which also demands similar skills such as analytical thinking, technical expertise etc.
The Company
The atmosphere was quite welcoming and I never felt out of place. The bank is truly committed to diversity, and that fact can only be truly appreciated through experience. Relationship building is also very important to the people of the bank who make the effort to catch up especially on Fridays after work.
The internship was very well organized from start to finish. Weekly learning sessions, networking dinners/events and recruiter drop-in sessions were all organized ahead of our start date to ensure we had a wholesome experience. There were no impromptu events that thwarted the flow of work, which allowed us to plan our projects around these important events
BAML went above and beyond to ensure we were adequately prepared for the internship programme. We had two weeks of training on technical and soft skills training prior to our start date. We were also privileged to undergo training at the Bloomberg and Factset offices on the use of their software for our daily tasks.
The bank is willing to hire candidates who really apply themselves consistently. A full-time offer is merit based, which gives interns a lot of control of the possibility of being hired which is a good thing. The bank always wants to fill majority of its new Analyst class with interns so the prospects look good.
