The Role
My internship with Lloyds Banking Group has enabled me to develop my skillset, work in a professional working environment and network and shadow colleagues to learn more about the company as a whole. I was placed in the area of my choice - Responsible Business and I can safely say that I have enjoyed my time here.
Most of the colleagues I work with respect me and value the work I do. I am given ample responsibility and I am trusted to be independent and get my work done. It is sometimes difficult to be given projects to own from start to finish due to the timescale of the internship but colleagues make an effort to delegate tasks that I can take ownership of.
My Line Manager and I catch-up weekly to track my progress and answer any questions I may have about my tasks. I know that I can always contact him if I need help but have learnt to consolidate questions to our catch-up as I understand he is busy. We've had a mid-placement review where development targets were discussed and this has helped me make the most of my time here.
Some days were busier than others but at quieter times there was always stuff to do, for example personal development tasks, extra training, shadowing other colleagues in different business areas. There were also busy days - but these are to be expected when pieces of work and projects are due etc.
I was put in charge of planning an event which was a good project to be involved in. Constructing a timeline, an agenda, inviting attendees and reviewing award nominations were a few of the tasks I was assigned. I was also given access to shared mailboxes and drives containing confidential information and trusted with the responsible use of these details.
This internship has definitely boosted my confidence, I now trust my intuition more and feel more able to make the right decision by myself. I am more competent with professional phone calls and feel as if my time management skills have been stretched as many tasks have needed to be juggled at once without constant reminders of deadlines.
The Company
The atmosphere is generally good, although I find as an intern I am sometimes the only one in my team in office as many of my team are based in other locations or work from home several days a week. Teams vary in their style of work with some being more laidback than others.
I think there is room for improvement with regards to the induction (setting up equipment, getting access to shared folders etc.)
There was an intern development journey which included training and self-development tasks. There is also flexibility to attend development sessions run by other colleagues. You are encouraged to work in a way that's best for you and your development is tracked on your balanced scorecard which reviews your progress through your internship.
The Grad placement is an enticing opportunity and I feel like after two internships with the group I am in a fairly strong space to apply, the rotations within the placement also allow you to experience different areas of the business. However I am going to try and pursue a more degree-related (Biology) job.
The Culture
Yes! All Lloyds Scholars and interns (who couldn't commute easily) were placed within the same student accommodation. This was about 100 in London and Friday and Saturday nights were often spent going on nights out and evenings and weekends exploring the sites of London together. We also walk to work and spend lunchtimes together - it's great.
If the accommodation wasn't paid for, I wouldn't have been able to work in London. This was also within walking distance (25 mins) of work which meant I didn't need to spend money on my commute. London is expensive and going out is certainly not cheap but it can be done due to the support the company has provided.
Good but so expensive!!! Club entry is very dear but you can look for guest lists to join before the night and look out for drinks deals which will make the night slightly cheaper. The £1.50 night bus is also a saviour for getting to and from the club or bar.
London has everything so outside of work there's never an excuse of being bored.
