The Role
The staff at Barclays were very friendly and welcoming. Within the actual program, Barclays put on a wide range of talks and events for interns outwith work directly linked to your line manager and the environment on the whole was positive and engaging. The work carried out was fairly simple however was a real aid for the team, so it felt like I was actually contributing.
Colleagues were very friendly and were keen to talk for the most part. We were introduced to the wider team, spending an hour or so with most members just discussing what they do and often colleagues were keen to have follow up conversations.
The buddy/mentor/line manager set up was very supportive, giving clear guidance on a raft of areas from career guidance to direct work tasks. The set up lets the intern be proactive in approaching their support members who for the most part were all keen to spend time with us.
The first few weeks passed fairly quietly as work was not too engaging but quickly picked up. How busy you are is very much up to you, and Barclays encourage interns to reach out to other colleagues and fill diaries with a variety of meetings and talks.
The entire project was carried out by two interns, with some oversight from line managers when the interns requested it. This was really positive as we had real ownership of our work.
The planning and work methodology required for software development/planning projects will be very useful for planning out computational physics programs.
The Company
Very welcoming, often people worked from home and if not the hours they worked seems very relaxed meaning everyone in the office was generally happy.
Barclays made a real effort to give the program a good structure, providing many different avenues to explore, events to go to and objectives to complete.
Online training platforms were provided and time was given to complete learning.
Company Parties/Events
Would definitely return if given an offer and the progression around Glasgow is really encouraging.
The Culture
All interns regularly had lunch together and went for drinks after work or on the weekends.
Glasgow is a very cheap place to get around in
Lots of different bars, pubs and clubs in close proximity to the offices.
Encouraged to spend time with charities and working in a branch during the internship.
