    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Greatly, it has been challenging and busy i have met lots of really nice people who have taught me about their roles within the business and have helped many of these. I have found certain aspects a bit of a struggle but mostly my life outside of work with having a daughter etc. Also found that i had lots of different jobs to do for many people i kind of slotted into the company as a useful resource but in doing this i found it extremely hard to find the time to do tasks set by the summer intern team infact finding time to read them proved somewhat difficult.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I feel quite valuable, the tasks i have carried out i know ellivated the workload of the managers i actually don't know how managers get time to do all the tasks they have so it has been insightful. Everyone i have helped has been grateful.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • if i needed help or advice it was available, when i felt that perhaps some days i was under pressure they tried to pass some over to other scholar.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • at the beginning i wasn't busy. On average i felt really busy, tasks i thought would be simple could prove to be difficult due to access issues (not even being able to print) or understanding a new system. i don't mind being busy but perhaps some of the tasks were time sensitive so ment i seemed to end up eating lunch at my desk, although this suited me as then i would leave a bit earlier to compensate and with childcare issues this suited me.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I think a fair amount of responsability i was tasked with helping in training and recruitment jobs which i feel are both very important roles and time sensitive. i also then whilst my manager was on holiday have been carrying out the manager meetings with BC's in the morning i feel is an important job as this ensures BC's are organised for their day ahead which is vital for good customer service in branch and understanding customer needs.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Taking an understanding in how the business is so complex with alot of different aspects involved but crucial to the everyday running will help to approach my degree and aspects of my degree from a slightly different persepective. Nevermind finding the customers hidden needs i will be finding the hidden needs in business and information related to my degree. I feel i have developed my Diary and people management skills, i have always been quick to carryout tasks i have been given rather than procrastinating within a job i have had much practice of this but also practise in prioritising which tasks are required first. Working with different people managers, LD's, BC's and CA's i have certainly been widenening my people skills learning how to talk, approach tasks, read people and get the best from them or for them has been good

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • i was lucky i had experience in a couple of branches, with people in offices and then in my own office, alot of email contact with many people the general atmosphere from everyone was good everyone was nice, honest some niggles (the normal with every job and life balance or changes taking place) but all pleasent. the staff retension most i spoke with have worked here many years and i feel that speaks for itself.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • If i am honest it was Belfast first year, i didn't know what to expect and i assume it was hard initially to think what to hand over especially with permissions etc. I do feel my manager i was under was really good though she wanted to ensure i got something out of the placement and when access proved testing she instantly enrolled others to see if i could assist them with any tasks. In summary My manager had organised tasks she wanted me to do which would have made the internship seem very organised but due to access issues it appeared unorganised which my manager was quick to rectify.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I feel the intern team were very keen to ensure we had the most out of internship with training and development perhaps now through the rest of the internship i will have time but at the minute it is difficult to fit this in
