The Role
The work was tedious in points, but that’s just the nature of getting to grips with a job like this. Other more complex work was provided alongside to prevent repetitive work early on. I was given the chance to push myself in certain areas, learn new methods of operation and encouraged to push my comfort zone.
At times early on I felt as though my work was not of importance. As time went on the work became more important and I began to get the credit I deserved, making me feel more valued. I’d recommend giving a few more word of encouragement in the first week to the work annintern is doing.
My manager was very good. They were very busy with their own work and so the system to assign a “buddy” was useful. Induction could be slightly more in depth but overall the support was excellent. The staff were always happy to helpmshould you ask for it. Being assigned a good buddy is important.
Some days I had very little work but this is largely due to the nature of the job. Projects spaced with no work. Employees who are far in a project to have time to get an intern up to speed and many of the others are waiting for projects to start. Other days I had plenty of work when projects were in full swing.
Increasingly more, working on projects that had the ability to really assist the company if I managed to get them to be useful. Otherwise, a lot of the work I was doing was important in the long run as I was processing’s and checking a lot of data most days.
I don’t think the skills I learned will help me overly in my degree as they aren’t overly similar. However, I do believe that the skills will be very helpful for my future career as well as day to day life. Being more confident in new situations is a big benefit.
The Company
A good mix of non work social conversations and actual work conversations. It’s a little bit quiet for my ideal working condition but I understand it is better for the masses. Everyone is always friendly which breeds a lot of pleasant interactions. If someone is struggling with something then people are there to help.
The placement was extremely well organised with my desk, laptop etc all prepared and waiting for me with everyone prepped on my arrival and their jobs looking after me. Some softwares, accounts etc could be checked to be set up correctly before hand for a smoother transitions but all in all it was good.
Training was arranged to learn software that I would be using over the internship and it was along with other members of staff giving a sense of equality and importance. My ‘buddy’ was also on hand to teach me all the smaller stuff early on and get me up and running.

They encourage you to return and apply after graduation knowing that you would settle much faster than a new graduate. As well, if you get along well with everyone and for the team then they will encourage you further. Some students get offers after the internship to save the application process.
The Culture
There were good socials with some different teams in the organisation but mine tended to stick to themselves and go home more frequently. Better mixing between different teams would be ideal so social memebers if less social teams feel more comfortable going to the social events. They were good at arranging drinks and meals for farewells/welcoming etc.
It’s a big City (That isn’t London) and so food and drink can be as cheap as you wish them to be. £4.20 for an average meal in the canteen. Train travel is also very cheap if you are commuting in from most any place. Other than that no extra costs.
Great nightlife if you choose to use it. The city centre has everything you could want from a night out and so the weekends can be very enjoyable. Worth trying out some of the smaller bars/pubs to really get a feel for the area and not just the student locations.
There are a decent amount of opportunities. There are socials such as badminton, cricket, etc and these can be very fun. Especially as you get to see people outside of work and bond with them on a different level. Makes working with them more enjoyable when you have something in common.
