The Role
Mostly had a lot of fun. A few bad days.
Given tasks which made me feel valued, mostly.
Buddy system is very useful. Occasional left alone but is the flip side to having independence and responsibility
Varied massively but usually very busy
Lots of project independence from early on
Learn many things, including what being a perfectionist really means
The Company
The office has quite a good atmosphere. The people are very easy to talk to and when you need assistance, they are always willing to give up their time to help. One thing I would change would be for people to see lunch as more of a break rather than a time to go and physically buy food then return back to the desk.
It was organised very well in most aspects - there were lots of talks with senior staff members and lots of network events. The timetable given by HR was very clear so it was quite easy to plan in advance, especially with all the admin which needed to be completed.
I think the firm invested quite a lot in me, both in skills training and in the time which people gave to help me understand things. I would recommend the technical training at the start of the internship to be a bit longer as for someone from a non finance background, it was still not the most helpful
Travel loan
Future employment prospects at the firm look very good - very clear structure regarding promotion at a junior level (for the first 6/7 years of your career in IB). However, not made obvious the headcount situation so at times can feel like you have to hedge your bets regarding team preferences.
The Culture
Team was a very social team. A few interns were quite social but the majority were not. HR could improve this by adding more social events for interns and for interns and analysts / banking juniors which would have a more relaxed environment rather than always being with very senior staff.
Extremely expensive, can't really go down for drinks and plan to spend less than about £20 if you want to be there for more than an hour. There is no nightlife in canary wharf, have to get the tube at shoreditch if you want to go out anywhere decent or interesting.
Literally no nightlife in canary wharf. There are a few bars so can be nice to have a drink after work with friends, but once it reaches about 10:30pm, everything starts closing and so you have to quickly make plans to go somewhere else, but the good tube links make it decent.
Apparently there are clubs which people can join but this has not really been made clear and it seems that no one on my team actually partakes in any of these sports teams so I am not sure if they are actually any good. There are a few societies however
