The Role
I have been incredibly surprised at how valuable this internship has been. As someone who isn't certain about entering the corporate world, I can confidently say that this scholarship is so much more than just access to a grad placement. Since starting my internship this summer, I have gotten valuable opportunities to gain insight into areas of law that I couldn't have imagined I would have access to.
Being trusted to do tasks that are of importance made me feel as though I was making a worthwhile contribution to my team. My manager had researched into my academic and personal interests before I started the role and gave me a task he thought I would both be interested in doing and be competent enough to handle. This showed to me that the team valued having an intern as they took time to get to know me in order to find the best way to support my professional development.
I am fortunate to work in a supportive environment, with senior team members always willing to support me in my role. Moreover, I have been given a lot of advice and mentoring on progressing further in my career by people who have been extremely successful in theirs. This is what I will appreciate (and learn from) the most from my internship, and I cannot express enough gratitude to all the colleagues who have put effort into helping me progress both within and outside my role at LBG.
I was given several tasks in the first few weeks and had to manage time spent on each one myself. I found that I was never without work and enjoyed switching between tasks at my own pace. I had several days close to task/project deadlines where I worked until late but this was a choice I made because I was enjoying the projects I was working on. All in all, I think my internship workload was very well balanced.
Within my first week at LBG, I was given a research task that a GC within LBG asked to be carried out. Furthermore, I organised a guest speaker event for MHUK in which we had the former Shadow Minister for Mental Health attend; my team allowed me to contact our clients to invite them to the event. In doing so, my team trusted me to conduct myself professionally whilst interacting with LBG clients and to host a worthwhile event that would help build our client relationships.
Throughout the last couple of months, I have gotten the opportunity to explore a wide range of academic and personal interests. Through the meetings I attended and tasks I was set, I have gotten to learn about things such as: data privacy and the new GDPR regulation; ethical standards imposed on our international clients; pro-bono work and the new gender pay gap regulation. Through my work, I have improved my research and analytical skills. Gaining experience with dealing with real clients has contextualised a lot of what I had previously learnt at university and working in a time-sensitive environment has also increased my ability to complete tasks quickly.
The Company
Very positive and encouraging atmosphere. Everyone willing to assist each other with any issues. Team members were very friendly with each other, often going out for lunch together and attending external events as a team.
My placement was very well organised. Within the first day, my computer, log in details, phone and ID was sorted out. My legal induction event was extremely useful and a great opportunity to meet the other legal interns and colleagues. The work I had to complete was set up before I arrived and I was guided through training I had to complete.
LBG is very invested in helping interns develop. My team were very supportive in helping me with the tasks I was set and senior team members always took time out of their (very busy) schedules to give detailed feedback on any work that I submitted. Colleagues outside of my team were also willing to let me help research on some of the cases they were working on. The overall impression I got of LBG was a very positive one.

The prospects in the company are very appealing. The range of work the legal community gets involved in is fascinating; depending on what area of law I decide to pursue a career in, I will be considering joining LBG.
The Culture
All the interns here took part in a charity challenge this summer where we were put into groups of around 10. I made great friends with the members of my team and I have really enjoying working and socialising with them.
LBG interns are very lucky as we have our accommodation paid for; this took a lot of pressure off us financially. In terms of socialising, my placement was in London and the cost of going out in the city are as one would expect. (Although, you do learn about cheaper places to go to pretty quickly, so it's not that bad - especially given that we do not have to pay for housing!)
Nightlife in London is great, as long as you know where to go! Interns often go out in groups together, which is a lot of fun.
The charity challenge we have all been taking part in has been a really fun opportunity to work on a project outside of your daily activities.
