    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Really enjoyed the 8 week internship. Everyone in the office, no matter what level of seniority, was very much approachable. Further, the work you were given to do was genuinely useful so you were adding real value to the team you were in. Additionally, you could ask questions, no matter how simple, if you were struggling and anyone was willing to help.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • As mentioned above, everyone in the business was very approachable which made you feel very valued. This was helped by the fact the work you were doing was put to real use, whether that be seeing it used in a meeting with a client or feedback given to you from your colleagues. This made you feel like a valued member of your team as well as the wider business.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Again, as mentioned above, if you ever had any difficulties with the work you were doing, or anything for that matter, you could always speak to your manager or anyone else, given everyone is very approachable. Additionally, being able to organise meetings with HR throughout the internship was extremely helpful for feedback if you needed it.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This varied dramatically on a day to day basis. At times you were in and out of meetings, attending insight sessions, working on your day to day work, and working on longer terms projects. At other times there were lulls, which may be due to the fact you are working during the summer months which is naturally a quieter time.

    2/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As mentioned earlier, work you were given was genuine work that may have been used for clients of in internal meetings. Thus, you were given a relatively large amount of responsibility, given if there were any issues and someone called you out on it, you were the one responsible for it.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Clearly all skills learnt and picked up throughout the 8 week internship are useful for later life, whether that be general communication skills when working in a corporate environment, or more technical skills such as modelling in excel. What could have been improved was more technical / job specific training, given there was only an introductory morning on the first day, however, I appreciate the difficulty of this given the different areas of the business everyone is in.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • As good as an office atmosphere can be! Everyone chatty, etc. but it is also an office so people are working the majority of the time..

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Was well organised with an introductory morning / lunch on the first day of the internship and organised insight sessions so you get to know different parts of the business throughout the 8 weeks. As mentioned, there could have been more formal / technical training at the beginning of the internship, as only having one morning of talks / introduction didn't really equip you with the skills necessary to undertake tasks on a day to day basis, this involved much more learning on the job.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company invested in insight sessions with wider parts of the business so you could get a feel for what was going on. Additionally, you had access to a whole host of online training modules. However, again repeating myself, there could have been more technical training during the first few weeks.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • What came as a surprise was having to undertake another assessment centre, in a similar format to the one you undertook in order to get the internship, in the final week of the internship. Thus, at this stage, I can not say much about the future employment prospects within the organisation as it is out of my hands, however, the future employments prospects are very appealing to me personally.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes - there were various different events organised for interns throughout the eight weeks, as well as further networking events with grads, etc. Additionally, teams were always keen to go for drinks and socialise as well as the wider part of the business you were in. Interns also very close and keen to socialise on Thursdays / Fridays.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Obviously living and working in central London is relatively more expensive compared to the rest of the country, however, you are being paid a salary throughout the internship, which, I suppose, is there to compensate for this. Additionally, interns lived in London throughout the internship and had very few complaints about the cost of living.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • In contrast to prices, the nightlife is very good in central London, as there is always somewhere fun to socialise / go for a drink in the evening.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There appeared to be different sports teams throughout the firm but little opportunity for interns to get involved in this.
