    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship varies a significant amount based on the department you are allocated. Despite all applying for the same role, all the interns have varying experiences dependent on where they work. I found my experience sounded very menial compared to the other interns. The majority of my time was spent copying and pasting from spreadsheets, and although the majority of my team were lovely and really helpful, the projects I had were draining and I found the majority of my experience very boring, and I struggled to get excited.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I think the majority of my colleagues were great and would help me whenever I had a question. I feel that I did just get left with their long, menial tasks for the whole 10 weeks. I understand that menial tasks are part of the role, however, it felt like a much larger part than it should have been. The nature of my team is such that everyone is on their own call, so there is not an engaging team dynamic.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I didn't get a review/feedback session for 6 weeks straight. I understand that my team have very important commitments, but I found it hard to work on my own personal development as everyone was always busy/working abroad. When I finally did have a meeting the team were extremely helpful, but due to the teams commitments I did not get much guidance, comparably to the other interns.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was busy most days, but extremely bored. The tasks I were allocated are important and I recognise that, however, I have learned nothing from completing them. I came to the internship to learn, but the majority of the time I have just been copying and pasting. The large copy and paste task I have had for over a month now feels never ending. As soon as I complete one section of it and try to move on to more interesting project work, people change their mind and I have to go back to copying and pasting all the time. I feel like this definitely varies dependent on department, but I do not feel like I have learned much that I could not google in an afternoon.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The meinal tasks I had were important to the business, so I had a lot of responsibility in this sense. Some colleagues were amazing at helping me lead calls and helped me develop my confidence this way. I really appreciated this support and the (great, though very limited) opportunity to take the lead.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I feel like there has been very little I have learned during this internship that I could not have researched for myself within a day. The role has not met my expectations; I feel I have moved all the way down South to copy and paste which is a shame as most of the team are lovely. I think all the interns (we all apply for the same role and are delegated a department) should have a similar experience as I am aware some of them have been given far more interesting projects.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • In my department, no one speaks to each other as they are all on calls with people across the world. Directly behind me are the loudest, most engaging team and witnessing this different environment that I would much rather be a part of furthers how little engagement there is between our team. Some members of the team try really hard and make an effort, but it is difficult due to the nature of our department.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I do not feel like there was a structure in place within my department for an intern. I spent the majority of my time copying and pasting on my own. Some of the projects I were involved with were far more interesting, but it is a shame as they were overshadowed by far too much menial work. Other departments have had a far better set up and I am aware they are producing intern guides which look really helpful.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • At present, I have had very little to do with personal development. During my catch up meeting (the first one in 6 weeks) I said that I felt I hadn't been invested in, in regards to personal development. I have now been offered help with my CV, however, I have nearly completed 8 weeks of 10 and feel this is far too late to be supported.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 1/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I do not want to work here in the future. It has not appealed to me. I would like to work in FMCG marketing or event marketing instead.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • As a team we went out for lunch a couple of times which was enjoyable. There was also a Summer BBQ at the end of my first week which I really enjoyed. Other than that, the interns have had to organise things outside of work. I wish there was more support here so we could meet other interns early on. I did not have a meeting with them until week 7 of 10 which is too late.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived in Slough and did not enjoy it at all. It was also quite expensive. I paid £480 a month for a single bed room. Trains to London are quite affordable, which makes things slightly better as I could visit friends from university. I did not socialise in Slough as no one else I knew lived here.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There is nothing in Stoke Poges, and nothing in Slough. You have to travel to London if you want any more than a local pub.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I did not find out about any during my time.
