The Role
Lots of work given, good structure, people are friendly and helpful. Lots of exposure and site experience on big projects.
They entrusted me with calculations and reports and I was treated like a permanent employee getting involved in as much as possible.
people were always around to help whenever I had a question. I was given a laptop with required software's so there was no delay when I started.
Roughly busy 5/6 hours of the day. The other 2 meant I could catch up on any work I ran over with or explore the industry I was interested in, trying to see what potential career paths I could go down with Atkins.
I feel I was given a lot of responsibility but not too much that I became stressed. I was trusted to do things on my own and use references indicating where I got things from but people were there to help also.
I think my placement has helped me realise what I want to do. It has been very relevant to my degree but I think it has given me more of an idea about what I may want to do post university. There was lots of training events and webinars I could get involved with and my manager ensured I was kept busy.
The Company
General atmosphere was fairly poor. One thing I did find was that it was very work driven, not really much time spent discussing anything else other than work.
very organised. Didn't have to wait for things to arrive and wasn't sat doing nothing.
Even though I was only there a short time, the company spent a lot of time and money on training to ensure I understood procedures and protocol.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
very appealing. Atkins is a huge company. You may have to spend a couple of years doing some work that isn't very interesting but there's so many projects going on all over the UK there will be something of interest that arises.
The Culture
Good. Think the other intern felt the same as I did about our placement. Glad we did it, but we need to do something that isn't based in an office.
I commuted to work everyday which costs £50 a week. Socials roughly once every two weeks which costs £15.
Good pubs, not very great clubs.
There was sports and social activities which I tried to get involved in as much as possible.
