The Role
I thoroughlly enjoyed working at Cancer Research UK. It is a large friendly office, and there is always something to keep you busy, and people to meet with to discuss your work. Having other interns around was also very useful and nice to be able to vent or discuss recent work over lunch! Such a big company gives you plenty of opportunity to explore other departments and it was interesting to see how all the different teams work together.
I had a weekly one to one with my mentor who always told me how I was progressing, and my work was always recognised well. We also had frequent team meetings where other team members would take note on how I was doing.
I had a weekly one to one with my mentor who gave me continuous support and guidance through the whole process. If ever I had any problems I would raise them with her and she was always available to listen.
My work load differed on a day to day basis. Usually, I would have lots to do after my weekly one-to-one with my mentor, and then towards the end of the week my work load would die down. Also we had two events to organise during my time, so the weeks around them were particulary busy.
I managed a lot of tasks by myself, which I had my own deadlines for and most of my work was then reported back to my mentor or other team mentors, so someone was always double checking everything I did.
My internship was in the job sector I want to work in, therefore all skills I learnt I feel I can apply to future jobs. A lot of guidance was given to me as well from other colleagues so that will always be remembered.
The Company
The office is large and open planned, and most of us hot desk. The atmosphere is quite relaxed and not too noisy which is good so you can concentrate on your work!
The internship was organised very well by our volunteering team. There was a midway CV and interview workshop which was very helpful.
We had training on our CV's and interview skills which was very useful for the future.
There is a lot of internal movement within the company so we just have to keep an eye on the internal jobs page.
The Culture
The interns all got along really well, and we organised a lot of socials and also fundraising activities.
The office is in Islington so there are a few bars and restuarants around which we experimented with on a few occassions.
There is lots of opportunities to volunteer on events outside fo your team which I got involved with.
